I had one. After two weeks of usage, unit stopped working, nothing helped, screen was black. Had to return it to seller in UK. Overall player is not bad, when it's working. Top bar on screen is overcrowded and within 4 graphic themes only one for me is good to daily use. As for sound - iBasso DX80 with Fiio E12A or Aune B1 sounds a lot better.
Anyone else get one of these?
Kevin (Massdrop Community Support)Feb 13, 10:20 AM PST Hi there, I am reaching out to you in regards to your order for the Cayin N5 Digital Audio Player. It has been brought to our attention that the item you ordered has been backordered by the vendor. We do not know when it will become available, so rather than keep you waiting for an undetermined amount of time, we had to cancel your order and refund you in-full. You can expect to see the funds back in your account in the next 2-3 business days. Our sincerest apologies for the inconvenience, and feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns. Best,  Kevin
I just noticed on the Cayin website that the N5 has a 'Bal' (Balanced) output for "Balanced Driven 2.5mm Headphone". Does anyone know if those are available in an earphone/earbud? I can't seem to find any anywhere. Is the 'balanced' configuration only available on headphones? Who makes those? Or is the 'Bal' output for future headphone/earphones that just don't exist yet?
Thanks again for joining this drop! We have submitted the group's order with the vendor and they are working hard to prepare it for shipment.

Does anyone know if the N5 is 'quick charge' compatible/certified? That 3-hour charge time seems excessive.
Does the Cayin play SACD ISO (even DST) files as seamlessly as my JRiver/ Exasound DAC combo? My two android phones (with app) quite obviously don't have enough CPU horsepower to unzip and decode...
Read over on Amazon the sealing strip on the bottom will not fit when the SDcards are installed??? Any one have any experience with this???

No... no problems whatsoever with mine. Using Sandisk 200gb in mine.
Anyone compare this to a Pono?
gdhour
Both have balanced outputs available. The Pono has detail, great soundstage, great separation and layering and textures. The bass textures are great. It has a great dac and drives my HE 400i's and HD 580's fine.. By the way Trance posted this in the Pono thread in Head fi post #4215 describing the difference in the electronics: Ayre did all the analog audio parts including Dac>IV>LPF>Amp and Pono also uses Ayres Minimum Phase Filter, so Ayre are essentially responsible for Pono's sound. I love looking at the Pono's pcb, as far as I know it is the only dap with discrete stage of MELF's +Transistor's + High Capacitance Film Chip's, for dac lpf stage and voltage gain stage, the amp is discrete Class A (switches to AB for higher loads) with a discrete diamond buffer, 2,000uF of capacitance in power supply for the amp. It's a thing of beauty. In all honesty it is a bargain to get Ayre's engineering at Pono's price point, makes other dap's look grossly overpriced for what you get imo. also does someone know how mnay ohm this player can support for those headphone that are hard to drive
Why you guys are even comparing the Cayin N5 with the Fiio X5 the N5 looks better, Better sounds, better components. And it has a ballanced output for balanced headphones. It's rare to get ballanced output on a cheap device like this and that actually sounds great.
How would this compare to the Sony Walkman NWZA17SLV? That's what I'm currently rocking, but am looking for something that can even sound better.
I have B&W P7 phones.
Can it move high impedance headphones ?
Too bad it looks like an 80s sci fi gadget. Fiio X5 3rd gen has dual AK4490.

How much do you think the X5 3G will be? $500?
Bamm83
It's a replacement for the Gen2, so its probable it'll be the same price... so around 399USD i would think.
Ugh, not really into portable audio as much now days but this dap is beautiful.
Got mine right on my desk. Two 200gb cards. Sounds fantastic. I also have the IBasso DX90, IBasso DX80, and a Fiio X5 2nd Generation. Cayin beats them all hands down on sound quality. Don't really use the DAC at all.

Separately. It's not like it's one massive card. It's not a big deal though.
Tsar_Bomba
Can you tell me more about it bro. I'm really interested because of balanced output.
Would this support a 256gb card?
Surprised this isn't sold out already. Great dap at a great price, even for Canadians.
AKM 4490. It is very good dap.
Anyone have any experience with this thing? I'm still rocking my custom high capacity iPod Classic for my car. It's finally getting to where dual microSD cards can get to the same capacity as Ol' Faithful. Though I'd lose video with many of these "modern" DAPs... I would have thought we'd have 500GB+ dedicated audio/video players by now, so many years after the Classic... Ugh...

This isn't really a media player like an ipod but instead a dedicated audio player. Phones have largely taken over the job of an ipod classic.
This dap blows away the ipod classic in terms of sound quality.

I know phones have taken over, but some still don't have microSD expansion, let alone dual slots. This year there may be 256GB phones with microSD slots, which would finally bring enough space. Then again, that's easily a $1k investment, and I want a cheaper solution. Also, I keep it in my car 24/7 for fire up and go. I guess there's always Bluetooth streaming, but that's another couple steps to add as well as a loss in quality. It's just frustrating there's not many modern solutions anymore.
What DAC chip is used, do someone knows?
