So, where do these speakers fail? They have ribbon tweeters so I expect high end to be sharp / detailed. What about mid-range fidelity and imaging? Are they sloppy / flubby in the bass?

GUTBThere is no failure in any aspect. Audio for treble, mid range, and bass is all high fidelity. The reason these don't have a typical high fidelity price tag is because the owner/builder is dedicated to bringing great sound at reasonable prices by keeping his overhead low and using lower cost cabinet finishings (vinyl coverings instead of piano gloss black paint). He uses higher quality (cost) components where they matter, in the sound reproduction system, not in the finishings, not in advertising, not in his pocket.
This link takes you to a speaker shoot-out at HomeTheater Shack. The Chane A3rx-c (the speakers on sale here) are not in the shoot-out, but it's big brother the A5 is. The A5 will have slightly deeper range and will be able to play slightly louder before distorting, but the A5 and the A3 will have the same audio fidelity. An important note about the HTS shoot-out web page... At the beginning of the page there is a graph/chart that shows poll results for the speakers (the ARX A5 has a low number). This chart is NOT the result of the shoot-out, it was a poll taken before the shoot-out of who thought which speaker would win. The Chane ARX A5 did win the actual listening test. http://www.hometheatershack.com/forums/home-audio-speakers/84858-official-1-000-speaker-evaluation-home-audition-event-results.html
