Product Description
Designed by special operations and martial arts expert James Williams, the CRKT Goken combines the strengths of a fixed blade combat knife with the convenience of a tactical folder. Based on samurai swords of old, the Goken features a 3.6-inch blade made from 1.4116 stainless steel with a non-reflective black coating to maintain a low profile Read More
Notwithstanding minus comments, here's some plus:
* James Williams is the designer
* Design based on Japanese samurai tanto
* (Have to assume that the design is proven)
* Blade shape is in the Osoraku style, characterized by the secondary primary grind that results a very long upswept and acute "kissaki" / point
* This shape facilitates both "cut and thrust" techniques (not a "tool" knife)
* It's a flipper for ease of deployment and provides a bit of a finger guard
* The handle is relatively thin / flat, making the knife easier to carry and grip
* The handle also flares at the end, facilitating retention
* Deep-carry pocket clip
In short, the price point / value is driven by the design. Research Sensei Williams as you like.
Hope this helps get some more commitments to decrease the drop price :-)
Thank you.
I was attempting a bit of absurd humor. I failed. I'm not good at conveying tone. Hope you enjoy your knife, everyone values different aspects of their purchases differently.
As a gimmick, this ‘field strip technology’ has the potential to offer its market so much more than it does. They could offer more handle and blade options, allowing you to swap out different blade or steel options. Say, if you had a handle option that felt perfect in your hand but also had the option of swapping blades from time-to-time for special uses... Doing some diving? Swap in a blunt-tipped nitrogen steel dive blade. Etc. It could be an interesting system with a little more thought and better materials. Ken Onion holds the patent, I think, unless he sold that to CRKT; I wonder what ideas he had for perhaps semi-custom variants...? I have too much respect for the creativity of the makers I collect to want to get into this kind of ‘cafeteria-style’ knife system but the flexibility is intriguing and there is a market I suspect... We should keep an eye on this system’s evolution. Massdrop blade options, anyone...? :)
Really like the design but $85 for 1.4116 steel is way too overpriced. Cold Steel uses this steel for their $20+ ultra budget models that's even cheaper than the AUS8A model. I could even get some Kizer knives with full titanium handle and S35VN steel for less than $80 during thanksgiving sales... The field strip technology doesn't warrant this kind of ridiculous pricing.
SefaliOnly one sold so far. Maybe the gee-whiz factor has cooled a bit on these field strip knives. Hopefully we'll see them come down in price or up on material quality soon.
