I'm sorry, but that is incorrect. Just because the manual claims that there is a 3 band parametric does not mean it is true, the manual is wrong! As far as today's terminology goes, a parametric EQ *must* have each of the three controls, and this constitutes just a single band:
Width (octaves) Gain (dB) Center frequency (Hz)
Without all three of these controls *per band* then it is not a parametric EQ.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equalization_(audio)#Parametric_equalizer http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/1997_articles/feb97/allabouteq.html
Some deeper searching into the older Sound on Sound articles shows that perhaps DBX is not-so-cleverly using different lingo to get away with calling this a parametric EQ, from back when 4 bands of fully parametric was a luxury on recording desks. http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jul01/articles/equalisers1.asp
"Fully parametric equalisers are much less common in the analogue domain than semiparametric ones, offering swept high and low shelving filters alongside at least one swept mid-band with resonance control. Such equalisers can only be found on high-end analogue consoles or within dedicated EQ modules, sometimes with the option to switch the outer bands between shelving and peaking modes."
Even still, this unit doesn't even have the sweepable high/low shelves, so it's a stretch.
