The latest offering from DJI, the Phantom 4 Pro builds on the success of its predecessor with improved collision detection, imaging capabilities, and flight time, plus a brand-new remote controller. Its FlightAutonomy system puts a pair of sensors on the back of the drone (the Phantom 4 only has them on the front), along with an infrared sensor on either side for 360-degree obstacle avoidance. Boasting a 1-inch 20MP CMOS sensor, the three-axis gimbal-stabilized camera is capable of shooting 4K video at up to 60fps and photo bursts at up to 14fps. Finally, the lighter, more rigid magnesium-alloy chassis improves agility and speed, and the slightly larger battery means you’ll get 30 minutes in the air between charges.
The Phantom 4 Pro remote controller is equipped with GPS, a compass, a microSD slot, and a built-in HDMI port, and has a maximum control range of 4.3 miles. Its upgraded Lightbridge HD video transmission system adds 5.8Ghz transmission support (so you can switch between 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz). And with TapFly, you’ll be able to simply touch a point on your smartphone or tablet to reposition the drone. Want it to follow a specific object? Engage ActiveTrack, and the Phantom 4 Pro will keep it in frame—no GPS required. Even at speeds of 45 miles per hour, the Phantom 4 Pro can keep pace in Sport Mode.
Thanks in part to the U-frame design of the integrated three-axis gimbal, the Phantom 4 Pro offers razor-sharp video. But its eight lens elements—two aspherical—also give it a leg up, reducing distortion and chromatic aberration, and arranged in seven groups to fit the smaller frame. To capture objects moving at high speeds, the Phantom 4 Pro uses a f/2.8 wide-angle lens and a mechanical shutter with a maximum shutter speed of 1/2000 of a second. A few handy new modes complete the package: With the Draw mode, draw a route on the screen and the drone will move in that direction; in the Return to Home mode, the drone will automatically choose the best route depending on environmental conditions; and the Gesture Mode allows you to capture selfies without the remote controller using only a few gestures.
