I feel like doubleshot MT3 is sadly going to just be left to rot on the vine, now that DCX sets can have novelty molds, but non-licensed MT3 sets still can't after all these years.
Good points all around. I wasted time reading Kevin's gross response, and now I just feel dirty.
Massdrop has a terrible reputation in the mech community, and for good reason. They have a long history of deceiving buyers and mismanaging projects. Kevin would like us to give him the benefit of the doubt, but that won't happen until we actually see things turn around.
One of their favorite lies is insisting that some reasonable request is flat out impossible. Of course they give all kinds of reasons. And then a few weeks or a few months later, they magically find a way to make it happen. It sounds like they didn't properly plan the MT3 tooling, which leaves them with no flexibility for kitting. I'm hoping they didn't screw up the DCX tooling as well. In any case, I'm betting we see DCX ortho by the end of the summer. Massdrop must know by now that they can't attract top tier designers without better kitting.
I'm not a major enthusiast and would probably fall under Kevin's "largest segment of customers" I understand that adding a spare single key like the B people are mentioning (idk what its for) would not be cost effective but if a single mold has 25 or so keys that means that an ortho kit, ergodox kit, or separate mod and alpha color options seems to be a real possibility for Drop to do. But instead of pointing out it is a real possibility for these separate alpha and mod options he just skirts around that and mentions the ratio's for ortho and ergodox and why it might not be profitable for drop to do. I feel like these kind of kitting being an option for designers is just a smart move for drop, you want to make the most amount of money, I assume that kind of kitting is already marked up as it is a smaller group of people getting them and you need to make a profit somehow.
Another thing is because Kevin mentioned it and I feel like it would be just a good way to show the amount of work making a keycap profile/set takes and just general teaching is to show the molds and how the making of DCX or MT3 works. This can both inform the general public the limitations of the keycaps sets and seems like good PR.
We are beyond excited to launch DCX Deep Space, designed by the one and only Booper! Deep Space first launched way back in 2014 on geekhack, in DSA profile, and has been ported to a few other profiles since its inception. And now it's available in our new DCX profile!
This is our first designer set for DCX, as well as the first to feature custom novelty keys - two things that we hope to bring you more of in the near future.
Speaking of deep space... has everyone been following all the photos released by the JWST? 😲
I love the look, but I will tell you from experience that if you are someone that needs to see your keyboard, you better be using a colorway like this in a well-lit environment. I have a Sky Dolch set that is similar in tone that is basically unreadable in dim light. ( I do a lot of work/study at night after wife and kid have gone to bed so I can work in quiet)
Something to think about before you purchase. Otherwise, I would probably buy the Polaris kit. I am finding it difficult to switch from my Domikey Semiconductor. My TKL has the Susuwatari kit, and that one is fantastic. Nice easy-to-read legends.
HighTechToidHi! A couple options. Ultimately the point of contact will be community@drop.com, so reach out there regardless. Established designers can send their portfolios over and any new ideas as well, and new designers can share their ideas and thoughts as well as any ICs that might be ongoing to gather interest. These will then be passed along to our keycap team to reach out and discuss where to go from there. :)
Good to see new set. But can anyone help me understand why this set costs $40 more? I have compared tens of times and cannot find any differences between kits from other set.
