When we got together with Eric Ochs for our third collaboration, we set out to create a knife that was even more compact and pocket-friendly than before—but just as much of a workhorse when you needed it to be. The Drop + Eric Ochs Otter is a laidback gentleman’s knife that does double duty as a magnetic bottle opener. Made with a solid S35VN blade with all the brawn you could ask for in a compact presentation, and a handle with Ochs’ signature, ergonomic egg shape, this folder is the perfect size and weight for everyday carry.

Yeah, that's what I was saying earlier about shooting a grey card first, then adjust the whole batch based on that. For like $20, solve all the issues with bronzes, and oversaturated timascus glamor shots, and all that fun stuff
john.webbEric Ochs just shared some photos with a video he took that he posted on instagram.

Unless this was Ochs’ suggestion, and as with the tepid response to Drop’s Path flashlight, a bottle opener on a knife seems like another example of Drop failing to understand their community. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Yes, I agree! Honestly it’s a little too late, appreciate what Sal has to go through to bring us Maxamet. But to be honest I think Tungsten Carbide knives take the cake. Sandrin knives just make SENSE. They have an ungodly amount of edge retention on par with Rex 121 while also having much higher corrosion resistance, as well as a thin blade and light weight frames. I think at the moment I’m just going to stick with my Spydiechef as my one and only knife. I want their tck 2.0 but I would be cautious of doing any food prep with a tungsten carbide knife because of the cobalt matrix sloughing off into your food. (Can see on Ada’s video the reaction that the blade made from simply just cutting food, it’s not rust, but it’s probably a steel cobalt mixture. Which from looking up studies does have positive cellular uptake.)

Considering getting it and modding a new backspacer for what is otherwise a nice looking knife. That bottleopener is a superfluous design atrocity and an accident waiting to happen. Not sure if it is worth the work though.

you know... technically some of the best edge holding steels are high speed steels.... you should just get those instead. cant really sharpen then without a grinder, but still

method_burgerApparently Vanax holds an edge better than m390, higher toughness corrosion resistance and easier to sharpen.

My question: why are y'all calling this an Otter and not a Lagoon? (Edit: If I get one I'm going to call mine a Ochs Lagotteroon and that's all there is to it)

You're the one who specifically looked up the Lagoon and decided to ask why this knife was called the Otter and not the Lagoon. No, I'm the guy who thought the knife was a Lagoon when he saw it laying on its side in the midground in a promo shot for the Drop valet tray, said in the forum 'hey, unless I'm mistaken that's an Ochs Lagoon, I guess we're about to see a Drop x Ochs Lagoon!' and then someone from Drop replied 'well spotted'. And then later on the Otter came out. I'm that guy. You're the guy who spent whole seconds Googling and decided you needed in on the discussion of two knives you'd never even heard of before. Grasp that; I am reasonably sure everyone else already has.

What's up with this gap under the bottle opener?

Yes, I have a fair amount of experience with these small magnets on knives as I have another line of knives that I designed that utilize a magnet to retain a marker/coin. From my experience these small magnets have little ability to transfer magnetic field unless they are in direct contact with a piece of metal. since the magnet resides in a titanium part which is non-magnetic this acts as a buffer for the blade. There is some chance of picking up swarf if you have that in your pocket or place in on a bench with swarf. Though even in my shop I haven't notice this as a problem and I have been carrying one of the prototypes in regular rotation for 4-6 months.

I’m not saying they don’t necessarily cost that much to make in terms of time and value, but more-so the value they represent post-production. Sure there will always be people who think that it is worth it but I feel like a big chunky knife with low grade steel costing $2000 is just not worth it, but people pay it for whatever reason because they enjoy it, I mean I’ve spent four grand on PUBG mobile in the past couple of months so I’m the last person to judge stupid decisions. having been into metal metallurgy and knife steels since 2013 I kind of cringe when I watch like Joe Rogan and the knives that he has or that they give him, it doesn’t matter how a knife looks when it uses 8crmov or whatever. CMON NOW, you don’t have the competency to incorporate higher grade steals into your knives then you shouldn’t be charging higher grade prices and when you’re paying those type of prices you should assume that everything should be covered all the bases should be covered because they CAN. My Prius isn’t a “luxury” vehicle, but every inch of the vehicle was crafted with thought and consideration, it’s not exclusive to price, but expected. Thought and consideration that should go into a $2000 knife is the fact that somebody who can afford a knife like this would also be able to afford a $250 sharpening kit, and would prefer a super steel for the super price. It’s like if I charged $200,000 for a Toyota Corolla because it was gold plated I think that type of stuff is tacky.

League544again, you bring up another point in a prius and design/price point. prius was designed with the intent of a low price point with high utility. value-wise it is fantastic (i drive a camry hybrid, same idea of good value high utility) and totally agree, i wish someone with a $2k knife would either learn to sharpen or pay to get it sharpened professionally. but we all know those guys who (stereotypes ahead) drive bmw's or v8 mustangs generally dont have a good track record for being good drivers. that being said, the value of such an expensive knife is obviously there, but it may not be in the category that you want. i for one will probably never drop even $400 on a knife, but i recognize that it is worth $400. in terms of diminishing returns, absolutely. the price of 1 knife in m390 is roughly 180$. that is 9 knives in 8cr13mov. in terms of value of edge retention for your buck, budget knives are technically the best. (according to a few cut tests, m390 lasts about 5 times better than 8cr13mov). that being said, 1) who wants that many knives and 2) i wanna show off my sweet sweet ferrari (no i dont have a ferrari, just an example of say, my damned design wraith. plus imagine having 9 base model prius' hahaha

Yeah I’m just some guy who’s into knives, I’m sure you know a lot more about knives from the looks of it. Just the fact that you mentioned Vanax really put the nail in the coffin. That is truly the God of all steals and I’m sure only a handful of people know that compared to how many people know about S 35vn. I agree with you, that if you do chip it, and it does chip, even though you can ship resharpen it with diamond stones it’s just ridiculous and unrealistic, and will remove so much of the already small blade stock of Sandrin 2.0 for example which I think uses the same sheet of tungsten carbide for all their knifes, but use different edges (same blade thickness, different degrees/design). The Sandrin tck2.0 to me seems like my dream “edc” knife: it’s ultra lightweight, fits well in the hand, thin blade, no annoying choil that takes up half of the blade (Spydercos zzz), big blade for its size. It’s just sort of a small blade overall and just imagine getting a big chip in that blade and having to re-profile that you’ll lose like 10% of your blade just because of that or even more. I think I’m going to wait for a Spydiechef 2.0 in Vanax, I see a perfect opportunity for Spyderco to release it. I’ve seen the prototypes for the Spidey chef 2.0 and it looks amazing like the dream knife long blade, slim, gets to the point, no fat. the Waypoint is just meh to me, even though Vanax is 30% better, my Spydiechef design is 50% better than the waypoint, so it won’t be replaced. Wait points is a great actual EDC like something you carry with you but then again I don’t really see the point of it being that corrosion resistant if you’re not using it for cutting food or anything corrosive. 🤷‍♀️ edit; just imagine a 3.8 or 4 inch Vanax Spydiechef with cf scales. 😍

Turns out I went and bought the Vanax. Now I have the quietcarry and the spydiechef. I am officially one of the gods of the knife world I have to be now right? Now that you showed me the way, the path. Thank you Colin, I would have never known about this miracle if it wasn't for you and you're incredible talents.

CdoyleAgreed. I have a shuffle that I don't ever carry (for a variety of reasons) and I would sometimes catch the bottle opener which sucked. I've actually considered grinding the opener off of the backspacer but I don't really like the knife enough to put in the effort.

I seem to be in the minority but I love the bottle opener. It may not be the most aesthetic part but it really heightens the usefulness. It could be a hotspot which may detract overall but I still like it!

OoklaYou’re right, I maybe was off base a little bit by being so aggressive. people have to remember that everything aside there is a reason for everything knife manufacturers do and it’s usually for a good reason not necessarily related to money. It’s just weird seeing how much people are willing to pay for a knife with an average level steel simply because it looks “cool” here I am saying these things while I actually do think they look cool and I would consider buying a titanium knife (got the Spydiechef chef coming with a custom anodization next week. Uses LC200n steel, not the BEST steel, but the BEST steel (other than s110v ofc) ;) probably a better steel for a chef knife either way than s110v. Either way Och makes great knives, if you look at the workmanship/materials it’s worth the price, I take back my statements. Got a little ego headed there.

I like the design and would have been all over this if it wasn't for the bottle opener. IMO, it wrecks the nice lines of the knife, makes it look cheap (think Kershaw Suffle), it's useless and forces the clip to be in an odd place. Unfortunately, it is a deal breaker for me.
