What is SpaceFN and why you should give it a try
The SpaceFN concept - setting up your space key as a layer switch when held - is probably one of the most useful tweaks in the keyboard hobby. Let me explain how it works. My SpaceFN article on kbd.news made some rounds recently - quite surprisingly given the age of this concept. This piece you're reading is a condensed version of the full post. If you're left with unanswered questions, you'll most likely find the info you're looking for in the original write-up. On my imaginary top list of the most useful keyboard features, tweaks and hacks, SpaceFN would deserve a podium finish for sure. But what makes it so special? In short: SpaceFN is easy to implement, easy to learn, costs nothing, can be used with any keyboard, and can improve your productivity instantly. I will list its benefits below, but can state right at this point that the SpaceFN concept, setting up your space key as a layer switch when held, is clearly one of the most useful tweaks in the keyboard hobby....

Overall, I like it. I upgraded from a Ducky Legend because the DSX had everything I was looking for:
Exposed switches MX Clears Metal case Detachable USB
I think the build quality is "pretty good". The case and plate are very substantial, but my feet are not uniform and the PCB does not include offset LEDs for the locks (even though the included keys were obviously meant for them).
As long as you know that this isn't really a $200 keyboard, it's a $100 keyboard in a $100 case, I think you'll be happy with the DSX.
If there was a black or dark titanium version, and tactile grey switches were an option, I would happily buy another one for my home.
Here's a manual scan: http://www75.zippyshare.com/v/pcXCWvtz/file.html
Who knows, maybe the next GB might have that ; )
I'm assuming it has to do with the PCB layout/design, lighting, etc. but I'm not really sure what on a keyboard has what value (this is my first mechanical so to my untrained eye/hands it looks/feels way better than any keyboard I've ever had). I guess I'm just asking for future reference. The tipping point for me on this one was primarily the case and the keyboard having the full layout with a numpad.
Also, how do you feel about the thick caps over the backlight on this board? Obviously it blocks light through the key, but how has it been working with the set you put on the board?
I use the $100 price as a "standard" reference. That is to say, there's nothing super impressive about the board itself. It's a standard Ducky PCB in a fancy case.
This is my 9th mechanical, and I'm very happy with it.
Yeah I'm getting some thick key caps to replace the stock ones as well so I'm interested to see how it will turn out (which I quite like but this set is the one I said I'd buy if it came out).
KB community has some snobs... Like certain brands aren't up to snuff, or certain switches are crap, etc etc. But TBH with you after buying a bunch and missing out on ALPS ATM, they're kind of all the same.... It ends up being a personal preference thing just like how your choice of switch becomes a personally one.
As far as keycaps goes, the community pretty much as spoken and everyone seems to favor PBT. But again not all plastic are equal.
