Hey, has anyone have any trouble with their Palo Santo's? I tried switching them back on recently, but realized that the cups weren't fitting correctly anymore. They use to slide on easily because they were big, like the Ebony's. I think the cups shrunk... Which is strange, because the Ebony's still slide on easily.
If I can't get these to fit anymore, I might seriously consider asking for a refund for the cups.
ctaxxxxCertain tonewoods are more susceptible to shrinkage due to low humidity. That might be the problem if your local weather is dry. But there is an affordable trick where you seal the cups in a plastic bag with some element that slowly leaches out moisture. I forget what it is. I think Tyll mentions it in his Foster variants video?
ctaxxxxIf living in low humidity region (or storage) & cups shrunk, (due to cup moisture loss in the wood), the idea PopZeus points out is the procedure except vice-versa on the moisture point. Per Tyll, seal the headphones in a plastic bag with wet paper towels inside the bag. This allows cups to regain moisture & swell to fit if they had previously shrunk.
See Innerfidelity 10/1/16 "A Survey of Foster 447342...Subjective Listening Tests...E-Mu Teak...TH900MK2". He specifically addresses this to E-Mu wood cups.
PopZeus had the idea, but placing dessicants or drying agents in the bag will remove moisture & the wood cups will slightly shrink smaller. So, use the method that suits which direction you need to go for either more moisture or less moisture !
From your description...if they originally seemed bigger & now seem to shrink, then you need more moisture & use wet paper towels. Maybe you live in a very dry climate area ?
luvmusikOh. Heh. I just meant the element leaches out its own moisture giving it up to the cups. The opposite of a drying agent like those silica packets you sometimes find in boxes.
jmonfireThat's a good point. If I left these on my headphones, i could definitely see it warping the plastic. I'm wondering if the Ebony didn't shrink because of the humidifier in my room.
PopZeusOh, OK, my apologies, seeing your point now. When I 1st read it, it seemed opposite to me, but we're saying the same thing, so my post was redundant.
Cheers Brother & fellow E-MU wood series enthusiast !
oliwekThanks for the tip. I don't have any spare cups so this isn't an issue with me. At this point, I'm planning on keeping both the Fostex TH-X00 EB and the E-MU Teak as my personal hi-fi summit duo unless the Teaks just crush the X00s (unlikely).
If I can't get these to fit anymore, I might seriously consider asking for a refund for the cups.
