I would love to hear from anyone who has swapped the teak cups for the other fostex cups. I understand the teak cups have the largest cups inside, and I guess I wouldn't want to tighten the stage any more but am curious to hear your opinions.

LMAONAISEI did some experiment a while back so this is all off memory so I could be a little bit off by now. I have E-Mu Teak and bought the Rosewood cup, then later on acquired TH-X00 Mahogany. I think driver wise, Teak has a tiny bit less treble and less vocal, but a tiny bit more bass. But driver difference is hard to test and I didn't try too hard to compare it so I could be wrong lol.
Cup difference is a little bit easier to test. Effectively Teak is different than rest of the cups, it was milled thinner (apparently any other wood would crack if milled that thin) thus result in more interior volume, which also result in bigger sound stage but further sounding vocal. E-Mu Rosewood is actually closer to Mahogany design wise, they have same interior volume and same narrow sound stage but also both has closer vocal. But I think Mahogany has more treble and closer vocal while Rosewood has more and deeper bass.
I vaguely remember swapping back and forth but I think in the end I like their default pairing the best, as in E-Mu headphone with Teak cup and TH-X00 headphone with Mahogany cup. So maybe the sound engineers did their homework hahaha. Again this is from a while back so I could be wrong. Hope this helps.

HydeI appreciate the reply, I find it hard to justify purchasing another set of cups, but it's obviously really tempting to want to try them, knowing there isn't so drastic a difference makes me happy.

LMAONAISELOL actually the biggest difference is probably Teak vs "rest of the cups", but between "rest of the cups" there isn't a huge difference.
"rest of the cups" as in E-Mu Ebony, E-Mu Rosewood, TH-X00 Mahogany, and TH-X00 Ebony cups. Then there's TH-X00 Purpleheart from what I gathered is different in its own way (never owned it so I don't know).
But after threads and threads and pages and pages of things I read, I think the top 2 are probably E-Mu Teak and TH-X00 Ebony. (keep in mind E-MU Ebony is different species than TH-X00 Ebony) So your wallet is still in danger. :P

HydeYes, the ebony is the one cup that always stood out to me as Hmm... what will that bass be like? I guess since getting into headphones I know theres a chance at experiencing a song I love in a richer way and that's the temptation for me, so the ebony makes me raise my eyebrow and wonder. I think i'll venture into planars before I invest in cups though, spread that disposable income evenly.

LMAONAISEYeah I think that would probably be the smarter move, planar and electrostatic (stax) would probably give you a more different experience and let you explore different side of things.
I think I tunnel vision myself with Denon AH-D2000 then E-Mu Teak and Fostex TH-X00. Amps/Dacs I've tried are E10K (sold), Fulla 1 (returned), UDAC3, and recently SMSL M3 (returned).
Looking back maybe I should've just spend money on more different things. Lol oh well I guess I live and learn.
