bbbb5Congratulations on your new Chipper. Is that the one from Fargo? Will girlfriend and co-worker fit? I can measure them and get back to you. Do you prefer imperial or metric measurements? Again congrats!
That would be great if Massdrop got us those dozen chippers? I bet bbb5 and awk are feeling pretty chipper for bringing us on this screen page so much joy!
I own this microscope. It's not terrible, but you should know:
- It does NOT zoom to 600x (even though advertised as such)
- It does NOT have a 1080p display (even though advertised as such)
- At $59.99, you're paying MORE than the price it's always at on eBay ($40) or pretty much anywhere selling it.
Getting more and more disappointed with Massdrop's prices and knowledgeability on what they sell.
Looks like a really good deal, I'm in! There are several little projects I've been putting off, this will make doing them much easier and more fun.
I like the Massdrop business model and friendly/honest community. Although I was not able to find a better price for this specific model, I don't doubt those of you that have found slightly better deals, especially if its part of some VIP membership or other running 'special'. It's just not worth it to me to create another account or to order through another vendor, I'm perfectly happy with Massdrops service and I'm in no hurry.
Everyones comments always appreciated!
Hey, great feedback, I appreciate the dialog. I don't work for Massdrop and have no stake in them what-so-ever, so take my comments here at face value and they are my own.
When I first looked at Massdrop, I had the same impression, and in fact, I think they were more like we both view(ed) their business model - price first. This kind of 'group-buy' is powerful, but only if they can get substantial numbers of folks on-board and willing to get in on the drop. I'm ok with a drop not happening because they don't get enough people to join in, it just shows the supply-demand side of things better. Unfortunately, I think Massdrop has gradually elected to complete a higher number of drops, and spending more time/effort/money doing better product descriptions/pictures, responding to customers and all the other things that are required to make this business model work. So its a tradeoff, I get that. And I have complained in the past about some of these fundimentals not being done so well; but on the other hand, I feel like the deals were better though, but I had to do more homework learning about the products, etc.
So we can't have it both ways, full service website AND best possible price. I'm mostly happy with the slight adjustment to quality content (including managing this discussion section; which is one of the BEST parts about Massdrop!} I've been very honest and critical of Massdrop at times, and every time I go back to read my old comments, they are there, and not edited in anyway I could detect. This online marketplace is becoming more deceptive, and I so appreciate that Massdrop has incredible integrity in my book. They will even admit and apologize if appropriate when they do (still occasionally) screw up. There are now entire (fake) review websites that manipulate reviews based on business subscribers and how much they pay; look at Yelp as an example of how bad it can get.
I generally only buy luxury items from Massdrop, things like you said, I'm in no hurry to get, but want a good deal and I really like the format and features of their site. So to me this is worth the premium. Big sellers like Walmart, Amazon, etc. already leverage large quantity (bulk) purchasing power, so its unlikely Massdrop can do much better than those prices on most common stuff they sell. Plus with so many people just waiting for the price to go down before they will sign up, it will rarely enjoy the 'mass' numbers and leverage it once had. I do like one of their relatively new features, the 'Would you commit if the price were this (listing a lower price)"? If that alternate commit price were significantly lower, they might be able to do a lot better getting more people in on the drops.
Whatever they do, and however they evolve I'll be watching, I'm a fan now. Like you said, the really great deals are fewer and further between; and I'll still get in on those, but I'm also ok with the premium content and exceptionally fair pricing.
ConsumerAdvocateYou, Sir, are a gentleman and scholar in my book.
Massdrop truly is unique in that we not only allow open discussion we encourage it.
Thank you for taking the time to understand Massdrop as well as sharing that understanding with the community.
Cheers!
Some sample pictures. Note that I am not using the Massdrop version, but one branded "MUSTOOL". It seems exactly the same though. I set the software to 5MP and put in a random Chinese memory card. It also does video but I didn't get to try that.
The images created by the device are stretched out and I had to resize them to a 4x3 aspect ratio.
After 5 pictures the software would completely lock up whenever I tried to take more pictures so I gave up. I blame the memory card, I probably should've at least formatted it. There's a little reset button on the back to use in this situation.
It's a little tricky to take a steady photo because the whole thing jiggles when you touch it. Maybe there is a timer function in there somewhere.

Here's what the original (stretched) file looks like as created by the microscope:
Benjamin6264Also if you search "600x" on AliExpress you get a ton of results for various products using this model.
It's also only around 30x linear magnification, and definitely not 1080p screen or saved images/videos, even though the software and box claims it does (at least on mine).
Just a heads up: I have a couple similar digital microscopes that also have the controls mounted on the imaging device, and I can tell you they are a pain in the ass to operate.
Touching and twisting the focusing knob will move the device, and those movements - however small - have an effect that is literally magnified the more you are zoomed in. Then after you adjust to perfect focus, and release the knob, the device will ever so slightly move again, resulting in a not-in-focus image. This particular unit on Massdrop is going to be doubly troublesome because it not only has the controls mounted on the imaging device, but also the screen; everything is going to jostle.
In short: if you value a solid, well-focused image - especially at greater magnifications - then you need to purchase a digital microscope with the controls on a separate controller. I can't recommend a specific model though - prices, form factors, and features are all over the board.
GrizzledGeezerBut that 600X Linear would be great!! There’s always some coworker who you expect may be packing an extra chromosome or two! Am I not right?! Who knows? I’m going to check a few politicians and Kanye West and a brace (or gaggle?) of Kardashioids with this thing (if they aren’t yet politicians by the time I receive it). Perhaps take myself on a little stroll down Pennsylvania Avenue At around 3:00am...? It couldn’t hurt; right? 🧐🤔🤨😀🍾🍾🍾
Massdrop, are you sure the device is OLED. I don't think the original manufacture makes an OLED version. Only an LCD Version. (posting this even though I know massdrop doesn't read these discussions).
