What exactly is the chemical in Insect Shield? Is it permethrin?

gnarledcouleeYes. I have some ExOfficio zip-off pants in the same material. Washed maybe 20-30 times, still seems to be working.
I see it's an old post that I just replied to, but maybe it will be of some help to others...

Brett919Thanks for the reply. I feel like this should be stated in their description what chemical is in the clothes. Permethrin is connected to some health issues in both humans and wildlife.

gnarledcouleeI think of all repellents permethrin is the least worst (?) And it's not directly on your skin. It could also be that the fact that its a woven fabric that insects have a hard(er) time to penetrate?

mdicarloI agree with what you say regarding the woven fabric, as far as mosquitoes, but it also works for ticks, which of course will try to crawl over the clothing to get to your skin. I have never had a tick on my legs or lower body while wearing my Insect Shield pants from ExOfficio, and even when I wore them in shorts mode, no ticks beneath the area covered by the shorts. Apparently they have improved the process since I bought my pants, because they were supposed to be good for 60 washings and now it's up to 70.

Brett919And now that I think about it, I don't recall getting any ticks at all while wearing those pants, and that could be because most of the ticks are at a lower level. I think maybe it makes better sense to get some treated pants before the shirt, if ticks are the main concern.
