I buy these things on eBay in orange made in China... exact same materiel and design and less than half the price.
Face it, even your underwear is made in China and Vietnam.
Here, here! Just because so much stuff these days is made in China doesn't mean we should just throw in the towel and give up. If anything, we should make an extra effort to buy American, simply to move more production home. China is losing its low-cost labor advantage (good news: they are also about to lose their shipping advantage -- as US taxpayers will no longer be subsidizing the cheap shipping of Chinese products to the US to the tune of $1 per package under an outrageous and antiquated postal treaty) , and at the very least we should encourage manufacturing that absolutely needs that to move to more friendly democratic countries such as India, or even to Mexico, if only to help prop up our neighbor and help it from descending further into a failed narco-state. But, that said there is much can be cost-effectively made in the US, and this will increase as automation advances. At least then the revenues are circulating in the US, and even with automation, US employees will be hired who in turn can spend more on US products. It's a virtuous circle that we all should be encouraging, even if it costs us a bit more.
The irony is that in my own experience, buying cheap knock-offs usually costs more in the long run, because they soon break and we end up buying the higher-quality US product after all. That doesn't even factor in all the wasted time and frustration dealing with the broken junk.
I own both the Matchcap and Matchcap XL. I keep 6 stormproof matches, a small firesteel, 2 tinder quicks and a SOG Micron ll knife in the XL and still have some room to spare. I use the smaller one just for matches. This is a great emergency kit to keep in your pocket when in the field .
mthayrIt’s actually just a cheap ($1.29) magnesium fire starter with an intergrated ferrocerium rod I found on Ebay. It does not have an intergrated striker, I use the SOG Micron.
Have the standard matchcap. Love this item.
Goes with me on every overnight. Light enough to not add much weight and bulletproof, waterproof so worth it to keep one fire starting source safe.
Beautifully made. Very nice fit and finish.
