Product Description
Made by Feather, a Japanese company that’s been in the business for more than 80 years, the Artist Club shaving razor offers a return to shaving as it used to be—a ritual rather than a chore. Similar in look and feel to a traditional straight razor, this “shavette” has one key difference: It uses replaceable blades, while a straight razor must be honed and stropped to maintain its shaving edge Read More

My hands are steady as a surgeon's...going back to DE's is just my way of switching things up.  Got boring for me shaving with straight razors.  Looking back, it took me at least a year with straights, to really feel comfortable, then several more years of daily shaving w/them to get to the point where I could damn near get BBS with one pass.  Throw in a touch up or two, & it was BBS, all the way.  Although the muscle memory is there with the safety razors, I can't get BBS in one pass with a DE, so there's a new goal anyways=:-)
I have respect for anyone that shaves...even if they use canned foam and carts.  Gotta start somewhere=:-)  For me, the attraction with straight razors started out with learning how to shave with them, then quickly on, I became engrossed with learning how to hone, but not w/using synthetic stones to get the edge, I liked Belgian coticules, found they gave (IMNSHO), the best feel while shaving, so I began buying straights from the wild (eBay) in order to clean up the metal so as to have a blade to learn how to hone.  Collected over 70 straights, many paying on average, $12-$15.  That was a lot of time on the bay
I hung out on B/B long enough to grow weary of posting there religiously (averaging 2/posts/day, 2500+ total?).  I think it was late 2013 I walked away from there, for years, then I came back a week or so ago, but the place changed too much for me in my absence, so no risk of hanging out.  SRP?, I may have 30 posts there...never cared for the feel of that forum, though I have respect for the founder as he's helped me obtain Dovo scales to repair straights sent to me.  Plus, he's always been straight with me, in any off list dealings I've had with him

Here's some of the straight razors I found in the wild.  BTW, I got the razor rolls from Whipped Dog

the same razor rolls, rolled up=:-)

I also played around with using film, to put a final edge on a straight razor.  The green hone (1K Chosera) is my favorite bevel setter.  FWIW, the film leaves a nice sharp edge, but not as pleasant to shave with as say, compared with the edge from a natural stone, like a Belgian Coticule

A decent rep, though Larry has got enough complaints on Reddit that they took him off the recommended list.
Buying a straight means some combo of: *you have to live with the edge you have *you spend a ton of money sending it out * you spend a ton of money on gear/cheap razors and learn to touch them up yourself
If you're not bothered by the first, great! Congrats on learning to be happy!
If you have enough money for the second, good for you. Please don't pretend that your shaving experience cost you less than a shavette.
The last kind of person (hobbyist) is the only reason I would suggest a straight, since you get something out of straight razors that you can't get from a disposable blade. It's an indanity that really needs to be identified and contained, though.

At first I thought something like "a blade for hipsters to shave the hipster away". Then I remembered I have a Gillette head with 7 fucking blades in it and to what a useless state modern shaving equipment has evolved. This suddenly made a lot more sense.

DimaGBack when Gillette came out with the Trac II way back when, I recall there was one of those spoof commercials on Saturday Night Live about a razor that had four blades in the head.
Obviously a ridiculous and laughable notion at the time. Yet, look where we are now.
I took up wet shaving with double and single edged safety razors, as well Feather and other replaceable blade straights, for the coolness and practicality of it a number of years back. It really is a neat subculture. I’m glad I got into it.
As for cartridge razors, I got as far as the 5 bladed Schick Hydro and the Gillette Proglide before I grew a beard and stopped full shaving.
I have to say, I did get superbly close and irritation-free shaves those two cartridge razors. And they were really fast, too.
So despite a lot of folks in the wet shaving community disparaging and poo pooing them, I found them to shave extremely well, and very quickly. So no complaints from me about performance.
The price of those cartridges, however, are close to criminal, and that’s what I find so onerous about mass market razors.
Plus, there’s no romance or soul to them. They're practical and have their place, but they’re not part of an artful or aesthetic lifestyle, if that kind of thing is important to you.
This Feather a very niche product in the shaving ecosystem, but a very cool one. Not only is It one of the closest shaving razors you’ll ever use (I have several of the straight handled Kamisori variants), but it is one of the scariest (even folks who who use traditional straight razors regularly often tremble at the extreme sharpness of the Feather blades and exacting skill and focus required to survive a Feather shave unscathed).
So it’s not a beginner’s razor. But think of the pride and bragging rights you’ll have once you’ve mastered it.

This post is still relevant and appreciated as the stated MSRP is apparently not current market price, and factoring in shipping this is no longer a deal I need to jump on when I can get it from amazon for *essentially* the same price any day of any week and actually get it without waiting a month for it to ship.

zypherionI feel that the trickiest part of MD is that they always list the first released MSRP prices on their items. Which doesn't reflect any current market price. Part of the marketing gimmick to give buyers a false sense of saving a lot of money. I still appreciate what they are doing for our community. Just double check price before jumping into any deal.

A straight razor is better in part because you sharpen it often and strop it after each use. I'll never get the "disposable straight razor"...

Hi, the razor just arrived and it looks amazing... only problem is that the Pack of 20 Feather Artist Club Professional blades didn't come with. Who should I talk to about this?

B.LoI have the same issue. They have an email if you follow the links through their help page if there's an issue with the shipment. While it's annoying, this is the first issue I've had since I've joined over a year ago.
B.LoHappened with mine, but they then shipped me the blades a few weeks later. Didn't even have to contact them. Had already purchased a pack of blades through Amazon, so now I have PLENTY of blades!

Sorry, a bit unrelated, but does anyone know if MD has done a straight razor drop so far (like a proper straight, not a shavette)? I'd love to see that.

If you're talking about Badger and Blade, why then yes, I do browse there from time to time.
Otherwise, I'm just leaving this here in lieu of responding. https://www.massdrop.com/talk/2581/thats-how-i-troll

Daisy_CutterI recall seeing a Dovo straight drop once, but that’s the only tradition straight I recall seeing on Massdrop.

A beautifully crafted exsanguination tool. Forget the safety razor - you haven't REALLY shaved until you've faced your own mortality.

Really wish that Massdrop would find a Schick Proline or Kai model instead of the Feather; Feathers are great, but the other brands are hard to find in the US and would present a unique drop. (Plus, the Schick is a bargain, where these shavettes are, let's be honest, really overpriced.) At least bringing one of the polished-steel models would set the drop apart from the Amazon listings. C'mon, Massdrop, let's see something exclusive!

Check out this one from Schick that's back up on Rakuten: https://global.rakuten.com/en/store/salonjapan/item/sj20183/
Wouldn't you rather Massdrop pursue importing something like that, instead of getting the same model everyone else is already getting for the same price with *maybe* a different handle color?

DanielRJacksonMaybe..... I mean, I already own one of the feather versions and know i'm happy with the quality. I'm only looking to pick up a second for teaching my son if the price was good.
That said, sure, that schick version looks like it could be a decent one as well. I'd give that a try too for the right price. Based on the price in the link, it'd make a nice backup for traveling that wouldn't hurt if it got lost or stolen

Which still seems to be a deal with the free blades, I see it averaging $150-$169 everywhere else.

I went to an old school barber in Pensacola and he used a straight razor to detail the back of my hair. I loved it so I am getting this. I also need to learn a thing or two about football (American football) so I have something to talk about with the barber.

TearsOfWarYou can still get a shave with a straight razor in Japan. When I first moved here it was thrown in for free. I stopped getting them after a friend revealed that he had mysteriously come down with hepatitis for no known reason. At that point I started to get paranoid about barbers because of the the lack of any reliable-looking sterilization equipment on hand, such as an autoclave. I guess they just wipe the razors off with a rag and alcohol. Some will have a toaster oven-sized box with an ultraviolet tube in it, like that's going to do anything.
