Product Description
Created for astronauts in 1965, the Fisher Bullet Space Pen is arguably the most recognizable pen of the 20th century. Capable of writing in a wide range of temperatures (-30 to 250°F), underwater, at any angle, and even upside down, the pen is equipped with a tip that consists of an ultra-hard tungsten carbide ball encased in a precision steel socket Read More

BaccaBossMCAnd graphite was terrible, it could break and send conductive material into the cabin. America used them too. But fisher invented the space pen using his own money and sold pens to Americans. Russians switched to grease markers and eventually... The Russians bought fisher space pens too.
TheBarkingIronHere are a few that I use with Fisher refills... along with my Raw Brass Bullet (love that thing, wish they had them here on Massdrop). Top to bottom:
- Modded stainless steel Zebra F-701 (has the metal clicker from an F-402... about $10 total)
- Retro 1951 Tornado (about $20)
- Parker Jotter Stainless Steel (about $9)
- Fisher Raw Brass Bullet Pen... love the patina this thing develops in no time
Fatbobby1If I have issues with something I purchase from Amazon, I return it. Are you a Prime member? I have had times when I ended up with an impossible seller, that was selling items as Prime items. Although I got free shipping to me, the cost to return an item was more than the item was worth. In those times, when trying to deal with an impossible seller, I contact Amazon and tell them that I am trying to return a defective item, and that it's going to cost me "$X" to return their broken item back to the seller. Amazon has always stood behind me and given me my money back, from Amazon, not the seller. I do buy a lot of things from Amazon, though, and don't return much.

Can you carry this pen on a plane? Will it leak if air pressure drop?
alchemyxIt will leak even in your drawer but only a LITTLE bit and VERY slowly. I have never had one with me on a plane but hey, they are designed to travel to space and were taken on the Moon missions after all.
KahlessGrease pencils may have been used, but no one, EVER used a pencil. That would really, really bad. Graphite is a conductor, and stuff just floats around until it gets trapped in a filter, or finds something to short out (at which point, it floats in smaller pieces). And these were developed privately, no government paid for their development, though many have been customers.
I have a clicky type one with a pocket clip, and a rite-in-rain notebook. These are great for everything my fountain pens are not great for.
Precisely. Especially since graphite could create shortcuts in electrical systems. That whole "the Americans spent $12b, the Russians used a pencil" story is made-up nonsense, aimed at making the US govt look squanderous.

“... Russians used pencils ...”
No matter what that e-mail chain says, no, Russia didn’t just give pencils to their cosmonauts.
In fact, the USSR bought the same pens from Fisher that NASA did, and got the same discount for buying in bulk.
The PR refill looks a lot like a Parker, is it possible to fit a Parker Gel refill in this pen? (yes, I realize it kinda defeats the purpose)
I have an older space pen with the U style and hate the way the ink flows (feels like a Bic) but have always loved how small it is when not in use.
Yeah I bought a Space Pen years ago and despite owning several different cartridges, it's simply one of the worst writing pens on the market. Line smoothness and consistency is atrocious and varies wildly depending on the rotation of the cartridge and the direction it's moving.
smudgefor future ref, the ball end leaked and these refills are super expensive but thats because theres few shops that stock the "Space Pen" here. (unless you find a clearance sale dumping that line for $2 eash, lol) Fisher for life. Yeh I do have Parker but Cross ink seems to go goopy. I found a Parker that was my mothers and hadn't written in 35 years, instantly started writing which puts it at the top in my list.
