Winner of a Red Dot Design Award, the FIYTA 3D-Time Automatic Watch looks like something out of a science experiment. Aesthetically, the watch is a marvel, but the unique design also serves a purpose Read More
Hmmm... not a good advertisement picture if they are actually trying to sell the watch... I think someone "dropped" the ball (did you see what I did there? :) ).
I think there's a rather basic misunderstanding here; OP meant the crystal of the watch is plastic, not that it's a crystalline plastic. One of the idiosyncrasies of English, that a thing's name isn't necessarily derived from what it actually is (window, portal), but by what it usually is (quartz/sapphire crystal).
sistem_32Well, the 'glass' is a polymer in a crystalline state.
Thermoplastic is either soft or hard, and you can control it's structure using heating and cooling rates.
Crystalline has a different meaning depending on if you're talking about minerals or plastics. Al2O3 is a mineral, BPA is usually used on optics and watches, both can form crystals. Quartz is only used as an oscillator component, it's useless for the glass.
If you talk about crystals in a watch, you are talking about the bearings of the wheels.
BPA tends to bend light more than corundum, which is not good on a watch.
Horology has been around a long time and the intricacies are well established. The largest confusion comes from when watchmakers in America started using terms incorrectly (calling a balance a balance-wheel, refusing to use correct assay procedures, etc.)
Quartz is NEVER used for the glass, you're thinking of the oscillator.
KhyronHehe, nice gif! I just double-checked it with my digital calipers and it's actually 14.9mm thickness. I'll correct the copy next. Thanks for flagging this, Khyron!
FIYTA I believe they are a Chinese company, all thing I believe is made in China
Here is my review / experience with FIYTA
my brother has an Fiyta automatic watch, it has an open case skeleton design like this.
He got it with full price(500-600) and was the model top of the line back in few years ago. The watch movement broke within a year.
The manufactory warranty repaired it in China but it only goes well for 3 month. After it minor problem pops up again, the movement sticks on few position, and it suddenly stopped working which needs really hard shake to get it back working. Then it was brought to the China again for the warranty repair. Worked for 1 month and the movement just died. We was tired and pretty sure they are not giving us new movement so we stopped that point, entire company/watch was lack of quality and craftsmanship.
Overall, The design was nice. And the design of this drop looks tremendous. i believe 230 is a good price to make a show on your wrist, but do not expect it will last longer then 2 years!!!! My automatic Seiko and Citzen (90-140$) have been serving for more then 8 years and they are still running great. I felt bad for the 70 guys who purchased it.
rayms6823Don't purchase those, better spend money on a "real" automatic or at least with better calibers, such as the ETA 2824-2 Top or Chronometer versions (Top is -4/+4 up to -15/°15 a day)
boozedDo they have jewellers where you live?
I can show you the dozen or so shops walking distance from me that will do it, or I can just but the sapphire and post it if you want to change it yourself.
If you are having trouble telling the difference, sapphire is generally thicker.
I had to look this one up on YouTube and I still can't decide if I love it or hate it. Regardless, it would certainly be an interesting conversation piece...ah heck, who am I kidding, I want this one too! lol
JBinDCI created an entire collection of their greatest discrepancy hits a while back—there are tons of them. But they do have a good track record of unfucking their fuckups.
