When people say that the cable's too long and wish it to be different, but "at least they dont increase the cost of the phones" i dont get it really. Isn't it cheaper to make shorter cable with a 3.5mm extention? First thing i'll do when i get mine is i'll cut off how much i feel is excessive. I did it with all my previous phones which ALL HAD THIS!!! ATH-m50, DT-880, both had like a meter to spare. And all i want to uderstand is WHY??? Why do they make those cables soo looooooong? I have no problem buying an extention to a shorter cable, but it doesnt work the other way. You just cant make a long cable disappear. If god forbid you want to go anywhere with your headphones it is almost as if you got to have a spare pocket for the cable as well.

FlorimerMy guess is that they have a lot of the current cables from the old TH-900, TH-900, and DxK manufacturing that they are re-using for the TH-X00. To make it shorter means they would have to cut the existing cable, re-sleeve it, and terminate the jack again. All of that needs labor and labor costs money. Now if they are making the cable from scratch, that would be a different story.
Companies make the cable long because it is much easier to deal with than if a cable is too short. If a cable is too long, you can braid it, cut and re-terminate it, tuck the extra length away, ect. If the cable is too short, than we have to get an extension cable as we cannot lengthen it easily otherwise.

Florimerlong cables means they were not meant for portable use. they imagine you will sit at your sofa in your living room and plug your headphone at your very expensive amp placed near your tv. 3 meter is just nice.
while in real life, many people are using it in their room sitting at their bed/table with their amp 3 feet away from them.
worse still when we plan to use it with our iphone& portable amp.
how time has changed in the past 10 years, while fostex still in their sofa living room setting when hifiman has $1800 headphone for portable/iphone use :D

needhelpI have an almost allergic reaction to cables just lying on the floor. Every cable i have is tucked behind or underneath something. Also even if i kind of agree with the "3 meters is just nice for sitting at your sofa near your expensive tv setup" argument, manufacturers still make an awful lot of lower tier headphones with obscenely long cables, like my Beyerdynamic DT-880, which is not a premium headphone as i understand, but still has 3 meters cable...
As i see the problem, it is just a conservative headphones market fault, thats all. For instance, none of the technological changes we saw in headphones for last 20 years were new. They just polished old orthos and electrostats tech...
And as an example of a somewhat understanding manufacturer - Audio-Technica had ATH-m50 (original) which got like a million complaints about non detachable cable. For a headphone that is used as portable in 50% of cases the stock cable was awful. So they did what they were asked to, without actually understanding WHAT it was. They released ATH-m50x model, with a detachable cable, but with a STUPID almost PROPRIETARY connector jack. Still props to them for trying :P

FlorimerBecause no one wants to be strapped to their amp with a two foot cord. Because no one possessing any logical sense whatsoever thinks that an extremely large, dual cabled, wooden ear cupped headphone with zero flexibility or jointing should be considered a "portable" headphone. Because hard wiring the cables minimizes any issues with connectivity that can potentially degrade the overall sound quality. These are headphones you sit down with and listen - when you can't sit back, turn on the turntable and sit between your high end, full range stereo loudspeakers (or if you don't have a top flight stereo system to listen to). They aren't headphones you plug into your phone and ride the subway with and then throw them into your backpack when you get to work. Geez...
