Sigh, wanted so badly to love this cutter, so many good things to love about the design. If gerber ever got it's shit together (for like actual 50ish or so usd), in say just 9cr & fixed the lock & action this would be great. Bump that to cpm-d2, 1095 cv or n690 this would prolly be a best seller. Too many probs, too many cut corners in the present iteration. Shame

Telling the truth here -- I lost a little respect for the dude at Knife Center when he said this thing was hands down the best crossbar locking knife available under $50. I hope Gerber paid his ass well to say it. The combination of rough brass washers and rough powdercoated liners and a kinda loose pivot bore makes this knife a project fixer upper or a straight beater IMO. There are several Harnds, SRM, Land and Ganzo crossbar lockers that are considerably better in the same price range, not to mention the Amare Fieldbro that Drop runs now and again. It's a big beefy behemoth of a budget folder but big business beancounter build-buggery bars the blade from being any better than B- -- and if I didn't have an alliteration going in that clause I'd probably have said C-. :) That said, if you trust the guy at Knife Center more than your humble narrator, he seems to love this knife.

I like the design, but would like to see various steel options offered. Why can't Gerber make the same design in several grades of steel?

rumata13At this point, for their lower priced knives, they're all about keeping costs down. It's unfortunate because they have plenty of designs that are attractive if they put quality materials into the final product.

rumata13I'd rather they used decent steel on the liners and fasteners. They're kinda trash right now - if they put this knife out with M390 and the same powdercoated liners I'd pass. For a workhorse knife for someone who knows how to resharpen, the 7Cr ends up being not so bad -- quite tough, takes a decent edge readily, it just will need touching up where a super steel would keep its edge longer. The other thing is, taking the materials up a notch on this knife, especially the blade steel, will add a little more to the price than you may be expecting because I can tell you that the blade on this knife is huge compared to most pocket knife blades. You're talking about maybe three times as much steel as the typical folder. It's chonky. Granted that EDC will be different because material prestige matters more as a general rule. A lot of people would want something a little more prestigious for an every day pocket knife once they've gotten used to super steels, but if you just need a heavy use budget folder this grade of steel has a lot to commend it.

I wanted this knife really bad, Axis lock is my favorite mechanism. But that colored inner liner ruins it for me. Colors are fine, but when it's the only option it really limits those it appeals to. Hopefully Gerber offers an all gray option. Otherwise this looks like a really promising knife.

It's a ceramic powder coat (usually there's an anode involved in that but most folks don't call it 'anodizing', YMMV) and I'm pretty sure whatever's underneath it isn't stainless. You'll probably be reaching for the Rustoleum to recover it if you strip the covering off. You'll want to mask the pivot area (like Gerber didn't) and probably lube it with something greasy that'll stick to all the exposed metal and keep it from corroding. If you don't mask, their cheap brass washers will just abrade the paint off and turn the lube into a mildly abrasive slurry with repeated use. Which is to say I think it's doable as a project but whoever does it needs to post pics for the rest of us :)

Anodizing or Powder coat preserve aluminum from oxidizing. If you actually carry this, that would not be good. I bought it btw and it's decent for the price but that thin handle at one end is just not comfortable and also harder to have a place for your pinky when you open/close so more chance of accidentally nicking yourself if you open/close one handed.

Welp...was going to pull the trigger but after tax and shipping, it’s cheaper on amazon, who has it in stock and can have it to me in 2 days. 🤷‍♂️

I'd give Gerber a large chunk of money if they would put their FAST system on a high-quality blade.

Fair enough, but it's my favorite locking system of any I've ever used, and I've had tons of working knives. Hate liner/frame locks, buttons make me nervous in my back pocket, lockbacks are awkward, etc. Axis locks are good enough but they're just not as, well... fast, lol. I don't ever think about opening and closing it when I'm working on something, it just sorta happens automatically. I don't notice things like grit, generally. And the fact that I can get a two pack at Home Depot for like $20 is nice because I don't have to worry about f***ing up the blades. But it'd be real nice to have a good blade for a change.

1esk19Fair enough. I own more than one FAST knife, myself. :) I myself am leaning more toward plunge locks these days as much as axis and compression locks tho. I'd never put a pocket knife in my back pocket so I'm not worried about sitting on a button. I think the thing I like about them the most is that the flip on a pure plunge lock is as smooth as it can get -- no detent riding the tang, no springbar messing with the pivot. For a guy like me, that means it's fast, close to being as fast as an automatic, which is not quite as fast as a wave blade, which is the other way I roll.

As usual - no mention of blade length.

Another “Made in China” not indicated on Drop, but found another website with the same knife unafraid to indicate the country of origin. Drop usually goes one of two ways, ridiculously expensive or cheap because it is made in China. Saddens me that one must spend $100 to get a good $30 product.

Shame on Drop for trying to tempt us with a good-looking folder with junk steel.

hatmanI agree. I had to look it up. It's a Chinese GB standard more or less equivalent to 440A.

colossalbreackerSame. Ordered the black/red version and received the gray/blue version. So far, no word from Drop's support.
