Product Description
From its clean dial and diver’s bezel to its 200-meter water resistance rating and workhorse movement, the Glycine Combat Sub is a staple of the watch community. It’s been done in a wide spectrum of colors and finishes, but never before in bronze—until now Read More
This is a great watch that features some amazing traits: good size in diameter, rather slim for a 200m WR watch, sapphire crystal and a very comfortable leather strap.
My copy came perfectly regulated, gaining only a couple of seconds per day worn on the wrist and since it's a regular ETA movement, there are no issues with having such a movement serviced locally.
I would not recommend bronze as a first choice when it comes to watch case materials, but for those that want to try something new this is a nice addition to any collection. Pictured with this post is my watch and how it developed a patina worn from time to time on the wrist, without any contact with patina accelerating chemicals.
AnassoI think it took something like 9 months or so.
I have no idea about durability, considering a lot of tools have survived from the bronze age and that bronze has been also used in the naval industry in modern times, I don't see why it wouldn't last for quite a while.
Love this watch; only two issues with it. Seems to run a bit fast, +20s/day but that's not horrible and easily adjusted with hacking seconds hand. The blue dial is so dark it almost registers as black unless in bright light. Overall though, the quality build is apparent and the lume is outstanding. It looks better and better now that the bronze is developing some patina and I swapped out the weird blue fabric band for a proper Italian leather strap.
DubyaDubyaHi Dubya, I noticed this post was well over a year ago, but I was hoping to find out who makes that watch strap and what model is it. I do like the watch, and that strap really does set it apart. So, hopefully this finds you, and hear back soon. Thanks.
Quality seems decent. I’m just a little unsure about the dial. I don’t know if the faded dial is defective or supposed to be this way. If the dial is supposed to be this way I’m not sure I like it. The strap is nice for a stock strap. It’s soft and flexible. The overall weight is very light on the wrist. Wearing it for a few hours, it feels good no wrist fatigue at all. The unidirectional bezel is great, very tight and turns really easy. The lume is awesome it’s very bright and easy to see. The bronze is unique and very pleased with the way it looks. Overall I’ll give this 3-4 stars only because I’m still undecided about the dial.
Update 2/18... After spending a week with this timepeice I have decided to give this a solid 4 stars as the dial has really grown on me. It’s so unsual, it’s very nice to look at especially the way the light effects the appearance. The accuracy is amazing at -/+1....That’s exceptional for any price point. Very good timepeice. Would recommend to anyone looking for quality and affordability.
I believe its intentional as they all have it. Perhaps inspired by the Rolex DeepSea which has a blue dial which grows darker towards the bottom to allude to the ocean growing darker as one dives deeper. I've seen the effect on a few dive watches and seems to be growing in popularity.
Everyone asks me about that watch! Even the Patek Philippe wearer last week in First Class. Actually, I like the strap, interesting color and texture, no issue with the clasp or fit.
Box without the watch inside and 115 euros paid to UPS that were never refunded by drop.com
Drop said it's to UPS to refund and UPS said it's to the seller to refund...
Bad luck for me and no commercial gesture from drop.com.
One hundred Euros (115 usd) for an empty and dirty box !
Kane69That sux ! , I have brought over 30 watches from Drop , lost 2 in transit to Australia , I had a refund within 2 weeks both times , zero questions asked just a refund ,, give Drop another go .
Watch looks good. I was disapointed with the painted buckle for the strap. Watch will not wind automatically so have to return. Massdrop would not take it back so i have to send it to invicta for the warranty repair which costs $33. Not happy. Glycine quality is low, so overall, sorry i bought it.
Watch arrived 2.5 weeks ago and I've been wearing it each day since. Fit and finish and alignment of everything is great. Screw down crown is very nice and smooth. Bezel has brilliant tight movement, better than the other watches I own. Lume is amazing! As bright as my best Seiko. The watch gains about 8-10 seconds a week (pretty damn good!). The dial, while the gradient struck me as it did many others when I opened it new, as the watch has started to gain patina the fade on the dial becomes less apparent, and I now think it looks really good.
Strap - I read many dislike the strap, and when I first opened the watch I did too, it felt stiff and cheap. However after wearing it for just a couple of days it broke in to my wrist and is now super comfortable. I do wish the buckle was bronze, as obviously it has not patinaed as the watch has, and now looks a bit out of place to me. I have ordered a bronze buckle to replace it.
Why we're all here - the bronze case! Was very bright and blingy (not at all my style) when first opened, but within just a couple of days wear had dulled significantly. Now after 2.5 weeks on my wrist (day time only and not showers etc - force of habit) it has darkened up nicely, with a couple of small greeny/blue spots but mostly just a darker colour overall. I like it a lot! Have a look at the pictures and judge for yourself.
Yes I know, but for me I like it better with the dark patina. I should take some more photos now a few weeks later. It does get bits of blue/green show up on it, but they seem to rub off easily so don't stay for long. Might be different depending on your wear habits, but a ride on my motorbike (under gloves) or even a day under a shirt cuff at work tends to remove any blue/green patina. Which I don't mind, I prefer the dark patina anyway.
metalhead140I did also buy another band with a bronze buckle. I don't like the band as much as it is bulkier, but I do prefer the way the bronze buckle matches the case. I did buy a bronze buckle but it's not suitable to work with the original strap, I will have to see if I can find another that is.
Fade on dial much more pronounced than in the pictures
Overall I love the watch. The case, bezel and general watch dial layout are excellent. I love the markers, the hour and minute hands, and especially the red sweep seconds hand. I was hesitant about the strap, but find it much nicer than expected.
Unfortunately, the fade on the dial is much more pronounced than it shows in the pictures. So much so, that is unattractive and looks damaged/defective. I would much rather prefer a solid color dial, but the pictures suggest it is a very minor fade and so that would be fine. I so wanted to love this watch, am hoping it grows on me because at the moment I am very disappointed...
It comes vacuum sealed so all of the patina will come from your interaction with the watch. This is a LARGE watch. Excellent fit and finish. I also have a Tudor Black Bay bronze for comparison. The Glycine is a more modern look wirhe the flat crystal and shiny ceramic bezel insert. I prefer the domed crystal on the BB but the Glycine is almost too large to pull that off. Time will tell how the patina develops but so far its going in a matte dark gold direction which looks quite nice. Strap is ok, not anything special. Buckle is colored steel so it wont patina. Back is stainless. Lume is bright, dial is busy but looks good. I could do without the date. Not a chronometer if thats important to you. For the price this is a steal.
The little knots on the strap are so fragile, they just snapped in half like paper product. Had to request for a replacement to service center at S/H of $28.
