Hey everyone, I want to give this another shot - a no frills GMK keycap set at an accessible price.
GMK keycaps are some of my favorite. Cherry profile works well aesthetically with many of the keyboards out there and GMK's manufacturing is fantastic. I don't think you'll find better when it comes to double-shot Cherry profile keycaps.

For now I ordered the GMK Carbon, it's the best NorDe key cap set with neutral Windows keys in the world today. (If you accept a proprietary Windows key, Filco makes one set also.)
What happened with the GMK White-on-Black https://www.massdrop.com/buy/gmk-white-on-black-custom-keycap-set , did it lack a NorDe set?? Otherwise it looks excellent.
Very similar to GMK Carbon was GMK Eclipse which apparently was slow to get purchases, it did have NorDe keys. https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=90360.0 , https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=91931.0 , maybe eventually it didn't even happen - I'm still amazed at the peculiar dynamics of the key caps market.
There's also Originative's Originative https://www.originativeco.com/products/originative , it's WoB but no NorDe announced.
Both GMK Carbon and GMK Eclipse are excellent designs. If he'd make an all WoB I'd buy 2-3 kits immediately.
Re the geekhack set you referenced, I posted them asking them to make a WoB variant.
The Kbdfans BoW NorDe kit you talked about, is it https://kbdfans.cn/products/gbenjoypbt-black-on-white-with-icon-mods-159keys ? Its Windows key looks weird (a tilted square and no blank option, what's that..). Will that dye sub likely stick? They look fine, however white-on-black would be so much more preferable. Of course the dye sub they used here, is a much simpler manufacturing technology than doubleshot molding. It's funny that today in 2018 when we even have 3D printers, producing quality key caps and making an economy enough to stock them, is still a challenge..

Marketing bs at its finest. $100 for some for some run of the mill looking, ***ABS*** set.
GMK should stop wasting our time and crank up the production cycles for some truly nice sets.
We should all boycott GMK and stop buying sets like this. Who's with me on this?

I think people with plenty of money will buy this set for the better material despite the plain looks. But people that can't afford to buy all sets that pop up will also want some interesting color combinations in addition to the better materials. That's why people aren't buying this set in the quantities of the previous ones.

Are you still consider to add numpad enter accent? This would make a full size keyboard more symmetrical.

Forgive my ignorance, but $100 for a set of black and white ABS keys with a standard font seems like a really odd choice.

It's definitely the Goldilocks effect - you can get something "good enough" for fairly cheap (Tai-Hao, as I'm using), but the price MASSIVELY spikes as you push for more and more premium quality.
Of course, the people who want that kind of quality are those more willing to pay the higher tiers of price. I'm rather interested in a GMK set to see if it lives up to the hype, and I'm considering picking this set up as a result, but I wouldn't think less of someone who'd not be willing to front the cost.

Thanks for your write-up, and this doesn't change your very valid point, but Jaguar isn't the best example as they're gorgeous but embarrassingly unreliable. As an example, there's a C&D review where they're gushing over the interior until they notice that there are gaps in the seam of the hand stitched steering wheel and the dash illumination started going out/coming back on every time they went over a bump, lol. GMK (by reputation) strikes me as more typically German; where such glaring imperfections would be simply unheard of and function always comes first.
Would there be a market for everything that would be left over after doing a TKL board? I can't see myself ever leaving the form factor and selling the downfall would be a great way of softening the cost.

Yeah, definitely trade offs and whats most important to the buyer. Not sure, but i’d imagine that would make prices even higher haha. There’s also the issue of color matching the PBT and ABS

So i'm guessing if you buy this, it qualifies you into the fraternity of mega nerds... cause why in the world would you get the most bland keycaps for this much money, when the only people that would care are the other mega nerds~ there are way better keycaps for half the price.

Sub-Communities within Massdrop aren't the general public. This is a perfectly reasonable deal within the context. You're absolutely right that value is subjective. You think these are too expensive. The +700 people who have already purchased the set disagree.

SohamYou aren't paying for the keycaps as much as the GMK name. There's certainly identical sets (or very close to it) for less than half the price from other manufacturers, and you'll get 104 keys.
As for quality, they probably aren't any better than any other brand. I have seen very few broken keycaps on any mechanical or membrane board in more than 30 years of computing, with the exception of chiclet keyboards on laptops. Those things are junk.

I mean, why not work with a vendor you ALREADY work with to help their Group Buy? I'm really confused about why we have 2 competing WoB GMK sets going at the moment. I don't suppose Massdrop and OcO have spoken about this

I thought about buying from Oco a few weeks back but I decided against it b/c black ABS sets just shine too quickly. I like collaborations. I like transparency. I'm neither an avid supporter or hater of Massdrop. I buy things when it seems right. This one doesn't seem right to me. It just seems strange that we would have 2 group buys running for the same GMK set. It's divisive

That is not all the time @Ensaum. Those are 2 of the highest moq buys for GMK ever. Neither of those sets started under 135... and most GMK sets don’t sell enough to drop prices.

I ordered this in late march expecting for them to be shipping around now, late april as the last update said, when can we now expect them to be shipped, or can we at least expect an update on the progress of them soon?
