The HackRF One is an excellent tool for experimenting with Software Defined Radio. It has a wider operating range than most if not all other SDR hardware.
There are cheaper options if you want to receive only (transmitting should only be done with the appropriate license(s)). The RTL SDR dongles are a great option for staple projects like listening to radio broadcasts or tracking aircraft via ADS-B. Most of these can be purchased for about $20 to $50, are recieve only and don’t have the signal detail of better dedicated hardware like HackRF One.
The main things limiting the HackRF One is no FPGA for hardware based signal processing (no onboard processing so you are limited by USB 2.0 speeds), a smaller bit ADC compared to other high end SDRs (limits the signal resolution), and it is only half-duplex so you can‘t simultaneously transmit and receive. The half-duplex issue might be solved soon since Michael Ossmann is working on an add on board to enable full-duplex. That being said, most people won’t be limited by these and if they are would probably have the knowledge and budget for other hardware.
