Note that shipping on iFixit is usually pricy, even to CONUS. These same products, with a coupon used, would run me $50~ on their website.
As for the quality, I can vouch for the driver kit. I used to do full-time on-site IT work, and our single iFixit kit (the 54-bit) was the single most used (and wanted) toolkit. It, along with two spudgers (less destructive plastic versions of the Jimmy), were essential to opening any Apple devices and newer electronics (such as Dell's XPS line).
The only negative I see for this kit is that it doesn't include the T-Handle screwdriver extension, which lets you apply a lot of torque when removing seized screws. That was probably the most useful part of the kit, to be honest (that and it having every bit we ever needed, and they never stripped/broke anything).
If you think this toolkit will do everything you need, then get it. Otherwise, please check out the Classic Pro Tech Toolkit (the base component is the 54-bit kit I speak of) on their site, as well as the Pro Tech Toolkit (which this Massdrop kit is the base component of). Paying extra may be well worth it to get all the tools.
Thank you for the detailed answer. The new kit will probably do, especially since it's way cheaper here on Massdrop than the shipping on iFixit (to Canada) for some reason (it's $70 of shipping otherwise which is pretty ridiculous). What about the Jimmy? With the more complete kits, I see that you also get plastic pry tools. Is the Jimmy enough to pry open my iPhone 5s? I know they are using a plastic smudger in their teardown, but still...
dnLLI've never used a Jimmy, so I can't speak to its usefulness. It's probably a useful addition to having a spudger, but not a substitute--more of a co-tool. You might be able to pick up a spudger from a different source, like Amazon, along with buying this combo from Massdrop. I'd recommend that.
Just out of curiosity why is this deal more expensive that buying it direct from iFixIt.com? Currently it is $34.95 right now on their site, with standard shipping just under $7 to my location. There are some promo codes floating around probably to reduce that too probably. Not sure how this is a good deal on Massdrop when you have to wait and hope enough people commit so that you can get it at the same price it already is if you by direct. I have seen this almost everytime I looked at a Massdrop item I was actually interested in purchasing, and turns out they where never a good deal, and could get it cheaper direct or from Amazon.
CreepyGnomeIt includes a Jimmy pry tool and free shipping. If you're not interested in either then yes, the price is competitive with ifixit.com. ALL genuine iFixit brand tools come with our Lifetime Warranty--it doesn't matter where you buy. (Just don't get a knockoff..)
Shipping Internationally -
There seems to be conjecture here on the expense of International shipping and if it is correct or not. It is not our intention to keep any of our members from participating in any of our drops by inflating shipping costs. In fact the price you see for shipping abroad is correct and is exactly what Massdrop is getting charged.
This is a question that does come up consistently and we are continually working to find the most efficient ways to distribute products to our International members.
JaysunI have to back the MassDrop staff here, iFixIt charge a huge premium on international shipments and that is if anything, the cost is actually less than what it could be I believe... I paid an extreme amount to gain access to the Pro Tech Tool Kit in Australia and it's a great piece of kit with an extremely high quality and the driver kit is easily one of the most handy parts of that. I'd recommend the 64-bit driver kit at this price, quite easily.
CoD511iFixit is not charging Massdrop for shipping—these are charges coming from their logistics provider. International fulfillment is spectacularly costly and complicated.
Thanks for the kudos on the kit quality. ;)
This is a good deal for international people as well, as iFixit charges a shitload for international postage, looking at their Pro Tech Toolkit, its currently $69.95, add another $69.95 for the postage to Australia, how is it so expensive? I've had much larger parcels sent to be for less than that? Amazon wont send their stuff to Australia either.. :(
