The newest offering from iKon, the X3 Slant DE safety razor is tough on coarse beards but easy on sensitive skin. It’s made of machined aluminum and based on an early-1900s design that mimics the efficiency of a guillotine—talk about a close shave! Read More
Its the first razor Ive bought so I dont have a huge reference to go off of, but I find this significantly better of an experience compared to disposable.
Super efficient when used with Personna Blues. My only gripe is that the blade needs a bit of coaxing to sit evenly between the plates (Used a handful of different blades to make sure it was the razor and not the specific blade.) If it isn’t aligned properly the razor tends to nick and irritate towards one end.
I've been using this one since the first time MD offered it. Previously used cartridge razors, so this was my first safety razor.
Before switching to this one, I tended to have some issues with ingrown hairs. 2 months with this, completely gone, along with the smoothest shaves I've experienced. Since I haven't used non-slant DEs yet, I can't opine as to the differences, but at $45 this is an excellent purchase, and is one I'll keep using until it breaks from god-knows-what in 20 years.
This seems better for heavy beards, or if you have coarse facial hair that isn't dealt with well using a standard razor. My facial hair is finer and less sparse, so it did not work well for me. I have a Merkur, and that works better for me.
The razor is good. Be careful if you have really sensitive skin or hair that grows in sideways on your neck. Also the blades that came with this are horrible.
Quality materials but it is easy to end up with an off-center blade and an uneaven experience between the two sides of the razor. Very sharp angle! Don’t use this one after drinking a few beers (trust me).
I really like this razor. For me, it is on the milder side (YMMV). If you do not get the angle correctly, it will go over your beard without taking off the whiskers, so some repetition is needed (practice understanding the angles). Once you get the angles down, very smooth, close, and comfortable shave.
Not sold on slants being better than non-slants but this one is made well. A lot of quality is evident, as good as the feathers I've held regarding fit and finish.
This shaves better, closer and smoother, on the first pass than a merkur 34c but the 34c shaves better on the against the grain passes. The space between the blade and guard is wide meaning it's a lot faster to clean the blade, especially with soaps that don't rinse so easily.
Is it worth it? Sure. It's, IMO, a nice intro into slants and what they are for. If I'm in a hurry i reach for this because it's one pass capability is great. For shaves where I go for three passes and a buff, then i go for something else.
For what it's worth the best blade I've personally used with this razor is a gillette platinum. Feathers are way too...unforgiving, leaving a rough, overly sensitive finish. YMMV
