Anyone have suggestions for what sort of soldering iron/wick I should get to build this? I haven't done any soldering since high school (20ish years ago) and could probably do with picking up a practice kit, so recommendations there would be great too.

voxdolo@voxdolo depends on what kind of money you are able to put down. The guide suggests HAKKO FX-888D and while I have not tried this iron I am thinking about picking it up. The reason not to pick up the cheapest irons is that they are not very good at regulating heat at the same time as no control over the temperature (bad combo), and the tips that are included make it even worse because they are brittle and might break under regular use. Other than the cheapest of tools any tool will set you up quite nice, if you find the tool to hot without temperature regulation you can in this case just use less time touching the components (they are not very temperature sensitive, so a hotter iron with less time would not damage them). I do not suggest a USB driven iron either.
The HAKKO suggestion in the guide is a station, and many times more expensive than just a pen you cant adjust the temperature, but quite cheap compared to other stations.

ZigguratAlso for anyone curious about better soldering equipment in similar price range as the 888, feel free to PM me on GH or irc @ freenode for links. They are usually in variable supply (ebay), so not really appropriate for the guide. I'm entirely unaffiliated with any of the above; just trying to get people to use proper tools :)

ZigguratThanks @Ziggurat! I'm not seeing a link to the guide you mentioned in the description. Is it elsewhere?
