The Jacks 'R' Better Sierra Sniveller quilt was designed with the ground sleeper in mind. You can open it flat to use as a blanket or make the tapered end into a foot box to create a more traditional sleeping bag Read More
As an overland adventure motorcycle rider, everything that is carried should have more than one purpose, and I find the option to wear the quilt as a serape is an outstanding benefit. It will not replace a jacket but I always ride with a motorcycle jacket, and I bet hammock campers are going to carry some down vest or jacket anyway. So with this I can use the same thing that kept me warm all night to continue to serve as a warm outer layer to make and enjoy my coffee. Yes, you can use any top quilt to wrap up in. But, the benefit to the head hole is it that it doesn't fall off you like a regular quilt draped over your shoulders and land in the fire or on stove. Brilliant. I have several TQs and UQs to choose from and this ALWAYS goes out on my cool-weather adventures- and yes temperatures are conservative- easy mid 20's in my 30-degree.
I had the lighter model, the Sierra Stealth. I bought another quilt and sold the stealth, very shortly regretting it. I never wore it for camp chores but sitting around a fire on a chilly night or better still, wearing it in the morning when it's coldest was epic. I'm seriously considering this and selling my current quilt...
I have this one and the High Sierra version, and the Greylock 3 UQ. After sleeping comfortably under this quilt in my hammock, I did breakfast then wore the quilt in serape and poncho modes while I broke camp on a chilly Shenandoah morning. I was incredibly and joyfully warm. I wouldn't recommend doing anything messy or strenuous (burpees are out of the question for sure) but for wear during general camp tasks it works well. It's a proper dual-purpose item.
I have one of these and it is awesome. I think the temperature rating and the fill power of the down are conservative, so I would caution against comparing unfavorably to others rated a little lower temp - compare the loft, dimensions and weight I.e. temp rating is basically the loft thickness, and if it is the same size, loft and weight, it has the same fill power down ( some use average fp, some lowest fp, and some maybe maximum fp. I admit I don’t use the jacket function much, but the hole is barely noticeable when closed. As far as made in the US, mine had the date it was filled stamped on the tag and it was two days before I received it, so it must be.
I brought this exact bag this time last year and paid $50.00 more than this drop...
Pros...Warm and USA made from 2 veterans..Cons. I don't like the Velcro slit to make it a "coat"..But this is a good deal...
FYI ..I had mine built with the sewn foot box..
JRB are some of the original cottage vendors in the hammock industry. Top quality, but not rock bottom priced or low cost materials. The Sniveller was my first quilt and I don't regret the purchase, and I paid full price...
