For the DIY crowd, this can be done for less than a dollar in a single binding post screw, 4 thin hard plastic washers, a dab of thread lock, and a bit of time with a dremel and drill press.
1. Cut 4 of the keys down to the size of the post.
2. Drill a hole through all keys.
3. Stack the keys, with the uncut one in the middle. Put the washers in between the keys.
4. Place the binding post through the hole. Use thread locker in its threads.
Done.
The result will be lighter and take less space than the individual keys themselfs.
That's pretty cool. I work in NYC, so even though I keep a leather man in my bag, I don't think that would be very practicle for me.
Another option may be replacing what ever binds the keys/tool s with something longer an put the keys on the outside. That way you don't loose tools and they're easier to get to.
CoolkiffingsYeah that looks like even the extended frame could be difficult. If so, you could maybe make it work by cutting the bows (handles) of those large keys, or folding the keys the "wrong" way with the cuts outwards, although that defeats some of the benefits of something like the KeySmart (that of covering the sharp teeth).
Thumbs up for the pixelation anyway; I regularly see people flash things like uncensored credit cards on YouTube and such. "Anonymously" posted pictures with clearly visible fingerprints...
MorrisseyFanI love Brad too... but the KeySmart was actually BEFORE Brads TiKey. There were even more before the KeySmart. And there will continue to be more after the TiKey. All of these are copies of one another. The closest thing to a unique item in this "genre" would be the KeyPort Slide.
Edit: Just noticed multiple people have pointed this out already.
No. nope. never. I got the original one with the kickstarter and it was a huge frustration and disappointment.
The original (and maybe this one) didn't actually hold all size keys, so you were left having to drill into the key to make the whole bigger.
Trying to access keys wasn't great and over time it would loosen the screws the keys were on and they eventually opened and fell out. A friend that also backed the kickstarter almost lost one of her keys because she didn't realize the screw came loose.
What made it even worse is after I was done with one side constantly getting unscrewed I decided to just stop using it, but I couldn't. One side unscrewed fine, on the other side the base seemed to get loose so instead of properly unscrewing it just kept spinning the entire thing round and round. I needed to use a combination of a screw driver, rubber band and pliers to finally get that side unscrewed. I haven't touched the thing since.
Unless this "2.0" version was completely redesigned by an entirely different company I highly advise against this product.
arcturussageI have both sizes of the KeySmart (not sure if 2.0 or not) and my experience has been that it's great when it works but I've also had some of the problems you describe. The main attraction is the slim profile but you don't really get that with the extended frame or with extension posts. You have to be careful and ensure that the front plate lays flat and equal on both ends and aligns with the posts, for proper and secure assembly. Getting this right without extension posts and lots of spacers when you want two (slightly bent) keys plus the USB and loop hole on it is not really possible, and that's probably why I've had some of your described problems.
Currently waiting for my Ashland leather key cover and hoping it can replace my KeySmart use case (which is to always carry the two-or-so most used keys in the front pocket) but there are many things to like about plate-style key organizers like the KeySmart and TiKeY. I mostly like the plates of the KeySmart but my experience with the posts and screws has been dissapointing, although I don't have much to compare with. I kind of find the TiKeY ugly (although the Mini perhaps slightly less so) but I like the screw pockets and the posters feel like they might be somehow better. Haven't actually disassembled my TiKeY Mini and tried replacing the TiPiKs for keys, though, so can't really compare.
I'd also love something with a built in or attachable clip. I attach a TEC P-7 [1] suspension clip to the loop hole of the KeySmart which is nice but I'd much prefer something that wasn't hanging lose but rather attached to the plate somehow.
The Rabbit [2] is also an interesting contender. Not quite a plate-style organizer, but it's titanium, a clip and uses screw posts that can be extended. Sadly it seems to be discontinued [3].

My worst purchase EVER. Useless.
If you tighten the screws enough to keep the keys from flopping then you have a hard time using the keys. Then no matter what, the screws keeps loosening and the whole thing eventually falls apart. I ended up just leaving it in my pocketbook with rarely used keys and it STILL fell apart. I can't imagine anyone being able to use this on a day-to-day basis without tightening the screws almost daily.
I would like to know why is this so expensive???
There are two screws and two aluminum plates and for two pieces we have to shell out $40. Huh...
If somone can make almost the same product for $1.50 why is this procudt 10 times more expensive?
We only talking about a key organizer here nothing more really. Just imagine for the price of one key smart you can have ten key organizers with the same two metal screws and two aluminum plates that you can change every three months if you wish. Also, if you read feedback about the key smart key orgainiser, four out of five failed within the first year of use. Most of those branded product made in the same factories and unbranded. I wouldn't buy it if that was some electronic product as a custom iem, or a cellphone etc.
VAS007I seriously doubt this 4 out of 5 failing crap. Like literally everywhere this thing is sold it has almost 5 star reviews. Even barring some fake reviews which their might not even be you are telling me that even with like a 4.7 star average out of thousands of reviews that over 80% fail? Come on.
If you want to buy junk direct from China so be it but even simple things can be made like crap. Heck these things selling on eBay could be the rejects from this same product for all we know. But even so my final sentence in my first response is still true. If you are willing to deal with all that bullcrap then have at it and buy one off eBay for a dollar and wait 3 months to hope you don't have a dud. Or better yet maybe spend 5 bucks and get 5 of them to increase your chances.
I would love to go in for this, but on the official store you can add extras like a USB stick, and I get free shipping to UK, can choose from more colours and get 20% overall discount using the "REDDIT" discount code. There's too many compromises for me to pull the trigger, but awesome drop nonetheless!
radiocafWhy would you want to add a usb stick? Isnt this more for keeping your keys together? It seems like a waste of two slots to me, especially since the price of USB sticks comes down all the time.
UrVAITguyIt's handy in my line of work, we regularly do log dumps of equipment and yet the company doesn't provide us with USB sticks (weirdly). Also I transport a lot of files in my day to day life too. I've always had a USB stick on my keys. :)
