I got the brown one. I've been looking for a full grain leather knapsack for some time. Simple lines, large enough to fit a 15" Macbook, but small enough to not be a hassle on the subway.
It arrived packed in a box, wrapped in foam. Pieces of paper stuffed inside the back to ensure the shape, so the box was pretty big. But that meant that it arrived with no creases on the leather, and basically in great form.
The colour was darker than what was in the pictures. Not sure it's just lighting because the grain also looks different.
Leather quality is great. Very soft and feels thick and strong in the hand. Seemed a bit dry, but I rubbed it over with mink oil and a soft cloth, and it started to look a lot better. Good leather needs some TLC, so not unexpected.
The inside is nicely finished. The laptop pocket fits my Macbook perfectly. Literally. No space for even a folder in the same slot with the laptop inside. So nothing moves. The 2nd pocket for a tablet not very useful - assumes the tablet has no case or cover. It's basically very thin. I use it to put papers only, and A4 size papers have to be folded into half to fit. Rest of the pockets (pens, etc.) are fine but not very secure. I put my spare glasses (in their case) in one of the pockets and it never stays. The lining is quite smooth.
The straps are good and bad. Very nice to have one where there are no dangling ends, but the straps are not that ergonomic; can't compare to (for example) the Peak Design strap design.
Overall, the size is exactly as I wanted. Fits the Mac, everything else and still looks good.
Advice for anybody buying it - get the mink oil (or other leather cream) and buff it up nicely before use. Helps a lot. I've been using it every day since I got it. No complaints.
Nicely designed and minimalist, yet roomy for organizing things. The brand label in the photo shows metallic logo, but the actual product has only an embossing on leather (not bad, but I liked the metal). One other thing I like about this bag is that it stands on its base without flopping over (even when i laptop is in there) - well designed for balance. My other backpacks either flop forward or fall behind when i leave it on my table or floor.
PS: Having got the black, I wish I bought the brown one instead :-)
I ordered the Brown backpack and it is very well made. The quality of the bag feels really good and the brown color stands out enough to look unique but not too crazy. The zippers are nice and thick and even have Knomo written on them.
The straps are very nice and are stitched at the top along with the grab handle, looks clean and relieves the stress on the straps. The straps are really neat as they do not have the excess adjusting cording that is used to tighten the straps to your body.
The main interior has enough space to carry a 13" MacBook Pro, a notebook for school and a Nintendo Switch (in a case), even leaving extra room for some more items like an iPad or stationary.
The front pocket has nice room to carry a 3DS or even bigger sized battery banks for charging.
Overall, the Knomo Albion makes a great daily carry backpack that can hold all of your items.
The backpack I received looks nothing like the photos listed. Instead of the metal logo, it is just an embossment. Photos from the manufacturers website and other third party sellers all have the metal logo. I've seen this backpack at a local Nordstrom before as well, and it looks nothing like the one I received. Quality definitely not on par as the one from Nordstrom. It uses genuine leather instead of full grain leather that is stated in the drop.
calvinwI received the same embossed logo bag. I don't doubt it is genuine. The ones made for MassDrop have the embossed logo to distinguish them from the regular ones; for $100 versus the regularly priced ones something has to be different. The embossed logo does not fall off, catch on clothing nor tear a hole in the leather overtime. I am all for the understated embossed logo. But yes, Massdrop/Drop should update the photos to reflect what the buyer would be receiving. The "brown" is a dark mahogany brown of smooth waxy leather, not the medium ruddy Tan shown.
This is a handy, functional backpack. It is pretty minimalist, but does a good job of carrying daily essentials without looking like a grade school student. I just wish the leather was more “alive.” It’s a bit drab.
tldr: not full grain. Buyer beware.
I didn't realise this until I met someone with the same bag... from a drop a few years ago. His is full-grain leather, mine is genuine leather but doesn't have a grain. It actually looks like corrected grain leather and is already beginning to show wear at the corners. Such a shame about the buying experience, because otherwise I love the weight and size of this bag.
Bought the 'brown' one. And it's actually dark BROWN not at all like the image displayed here. Wish I had read other reviews before purchasing. However quality of the leather and craftsmanship seems superb. Would have rated 5+ stars if colour were within normal discrepancies due to image/monitor calibration. BUT you can find earlier reviews also complaining about colour, and noone at massdrop cared about changing the image?! So my rating is about massdrop, not knomo. Go for the black one - I don't think there can be much colour difference in black ;)
