Massdrop has never been an authorized dealer on anything sold here and I would hazard a guess that they're not quite ready to offer life-time support on these either.
Electrostatic drivers are delicate devices. Excess physical shock and issues with their E/90 energizer seem to be primary culprits. Often people get the headphone replaced when their E/90 is malfunctioning and continue to blame the headphone. It is not a standard headphone and should not be treated as such. A lot of people will buy these hoping to get stax quality at a discount, and it's just not the case.
Being $1000 headphones you would expect bullet proof build, but remember these are a delicate estat headphone and energizer combo. Both devices need to work for this to operate and pinning down a problem which could have happened in transit or off the assembly line is really hard to nail down.
Anyway... I'm sure you can find lots of positive, negative, and just plain ignorant things around the web about these cans. They were developed in the 90s and electrostatic drivers are not exactly common-place. I hope massdrop can give you an answer about their dealer status to put your worries at rest. If I didn't have a pair I would have be on this drop.
These are 100% covered under Koss' lifetime warranty program. There's a lot of confusion around warranties and Massdrop, here's why: Massdrop isn't a traditional sales channel, we're new, and companies don't know how to categorize us. Every time we're working direct, we negotiate so all products sold are covered by the manufacturers' warranty program. When we're not working direct, we provide an equivalent warranty via Massdrop.
We're trying to make this more straight forward but here's the real trick. When we're negotiating and setting up buys with the national sales/marketing manager for XYZ headphone company, they aren't in contact with customer service reps. So when someone calls into XYZ headphone company and asks if Massdrop is a authorized retailer, the rep looks at their list, says no, and moves on. In reality, we're authorized but we're not on the list because we move too fast for companies built on traditional retail.
Anyway, thanks for your feedback. We're always trying to improve and your opinion is an important indication of community perception.
