I I really like the KZ ZS6. My musical preference is vocals preferably female and bass.
I owned the KZ ATE. (They recently got run over by my car) I really liked the Bass powerful and boomy. But they were not quite endgame material. I wanted to try out multiple driver IEMs. When I saw all the hype on the KZ zs5 I jumped at them. And when I compared them to the ate's, I was less than impressed. I was to the point of returning them. Then through some suggestions on a forum I realized I had one of the cords plugged in backwards I had a polarity problem. (Side note for you: make sure the letter on the cord is on the same side as the letter on the IEM). After getting the chords situated correctly their sound improved significantly but they were still bright on the treble. I tried to equalize them out but that only worked so so. there was one aspect I really liked about them but seemed very subdued, It was the semblance of really deep bass but it was very much in the background. Since historically I go through earphones every few months because the cord always breaks where it goes into my pockets, I had a few extra tips I found some with a wide aperture and used those. The wide aperture solved the bright trebel and gave the bass much deeper sound. With these new tips I preferred the KZ ZS5 to the KZ ate. The construction of the KZ zs5 was a little lacking though, I had broken plastic iems before so I had decided I wanted metal ones. Enter the KZ ZS6.
The KZ ZS6 solved the construction problem I had. All aluminum Construction quite sturdy and they look really good.
The tips that came with these we're very good probably just right. Every once in awhile I hear a brightness to the treble that is uncomfortable, but it's like a couple times a day versus a couple times this song. Not so much that I want to do anything about it. Their bass signature is stronger than their predecessor. What seemed just Out Of Reach on the KZ zs5 were front and center oh my word, I have never heard such a great base on an IEM. Deep deep bass along with a good midbass. When the bass kicks in I want to stop what I'm doing and just listen. It puts a smile on my face. I do equalize my bass at probably 20 to 30% above neutral.
At neutral the vocals do seem recessed. Ugg I can't seem to have everything in 1 IEM. The vocals are good but they don't make me stop want to close my eyes and just listen. But I do have to say they're pretty close to that. I enjoy listening to them.
Treble I don't much care about. Sorry about that treble lovers. But I really do love detail. And these can deliver some pretty outstanding detail. I no longer have my Monoprice M560s but I feel like the detail is similar. Unfortunately I can't do a side-by-side compairison anymore. The detail is so subtle you will only notice it when you make sure your ears are very clean. I rolled the tips on them thinking I would get bigger Bass with JVC spiral dots. And I did the bass got Boomer but it also got less precise. I'm sure I will find different circumstances to enjoy the different tips. (One more side note: rolling tips has something to do with fit but pay attention to the aperture size small aperture means you will have more treble large aperture size means you will have more Bass. Ask anyone with the LZ A4 iems.)
So in my opinion these KZ ZS6 are the best KZ has so far. The bass alone is a reason to upgrade from the KZ zs5. The better Construction is another reason that all by itself is a reason to upgrade. It seems they respond really well to Equalization especially in the bass. So are these and the gay material. Sadly no. Although these are closed and that's I'm starting to doubt weather there exists such a thing for me. I kind of think that one IEM cannot have it all. But for excellent bass and really good vocals these have my current recommendation.
