Lol this product looks like it cost maybe 5 dollar product.
Again massive fail product as you can get the same product for a few bucks more on Amazon.
It's missing a c clamp to hold the product in place.
No grommets tho build and secure the knife
No customizable angles for specific knives.

I linked the exact model massdrop is advertising bud. Any others it links to that are cheaper are not the exact same model. Notably the one about the same price as the massdrop, but doesn't include the rubber pads and different stones.

No international orders? I understand the knifes can't be shipped, but I would like the sharpening tools nonetheless

The USA is only 4.3% of the world population, I wish Americans would stop going on about how it's cheaper on Amazon or Walmart or whatever, I can't find it cheaper than Massdrop.

rthorntnDitto: Whoever said it, then either you're not looking hard enough or you're living somewhere unreasonably expensive. Massdrop only on rare occasions produces a bang up bargain. Most of the time its about maybe getting products that otherwise are hard to find, seeing something that is novel or new, or getting a item produced only for Massdrop. If you cannot find it cheaper, don't blame my citizenship

rthorntnI find Drop to have pretty good prices when compared to Canada... as long as they don't screw up the shipping charges. I have happily purchased several items from Drop before. But, NEVER once have I wished Americans would stop pointing to cheaper sources! Sorry, but that is just a silly ask.
Where is this listed for 76.00?? On their own site it is listed for 50. That is some shady shit. It's false advertising for sure. Pretty garbage thing to do to people massdrop.

OK guys, here it is from the horse's mouth: I phoned the Lansky company and spoke to one of their experts, and here is what he said: First, there is a bit of a learning curve to this. How steep, well, "that depends upon you." A few caveats: He did point out that unless you're particularly precise, this system could end up putting two separate edges on something like an 8" chef's knife, for example. He also pointed out that it's great on knives up to 5" in length, but if you don't know the original blade angle, you might well be putting a new angle on your blade, so he suggested phoning the knife company to learn the blade angle before you commence sharpening. The photo shows someone sharpening a knife while holding the apparatus in his hand. That can only be done by an expert. Lansky sells a device that you can clamp onto a table that will hold everything in place. Highly recommended.
Swiss Army knives use a particularly hard steel, so you'll have to work a bit harder on them. The good news is that Victorinox will sharpen any Swiss Army knife for free. All you need to do is send it in to their headquarters in Shelton, CT., along with a nominal sum for shipping, and they'll return the knife to you in its original condition, and that includes the other tools on the knife.
Also, the Lansky website has several other stones that can enhance the sharpening experience and give you some awesome results.
In short, it's a very good knife sharpener for what it does; you just need to know what it does. And by the way, I pulled the trigger on this model. I have some stones left over from a previous lifetime, but it's time to renew, and pick up some new stones as well.

Is there an online reference somewhere that explains what the varjous types of steel (420HC, 12C27, 14C28, D2, etc.) are?

MekratrigAll steel components is easy to find online by simply search on google. Victorinox does not indicate the steel they use. However, if you sharp or deal with enough steel, you can basically tall the hardness just by sharpen it. 400 series stainless steel use to be most common to use on blade, 440C was the best steel on a blade for a well due to the high carbon and stainless nature. 420HC is 420 high carbon which is a shitty steel unless it heat treated well, like buck 420HC. however, it will still be less than most high end steel, it will be soft. 12C27m or 14C28n are sandvik steel you can find the info on google easily, the difference between those two are meanly C,Cr and Mn. in an other word, 14c28n is harder, and more stainless than 12c27m D2 is a tool steel, not stainless at all...so it will rust on yo, but it is super tough and hard, it can keep a edge than every thing above and and take a beat like a boss. there are also other tool steel like O1, A2 etc.... You can learn more by simply search on line or even better, use them yourself... If you have a good understanding of chemistry, I will suggest you to search all the components of different steels, it will help you you to understand it better.

Hi - I am extremly interested in this drop. However what is this seems a knockoff of? I'd prefer to purchase the actual system, or as you mentioned upgrading the cutting mediums. I assume your talking about the 5 colored blocks with different grits. Please respond ASAP if possible. Cheers!

estearHi estear Apologies .....that comment was supposed to be for Fuzz regarding clones of the edge pro system.
To my absolute knowledge massdrop wouldnt touch knock off gear and Lansky products are reliable and good to go.
I own a genuine edge pro. Id like to try this set too
sorry if my statement was unclear lol

POS product. Owned it, used, ditched it.
The rods bend over time, changing the angle making consistency impossible. Lansky should have used tri beams, possibly on swivels for the rods. How do you attach this to a table? Nice that they finally include rubber grips on the vice clamp, scratched up a perfectly polished knife with mine. Can't use it for thick blades like axes et c. No granularity in the angles. The stones are too small. I could go on...

all valid points. My leading issue was that the rods bend...

welinderthey get a very slight bend over time, just bend them back and always lay them on a water level meter to make sure they are straight.

Owned one. It is Junk, I wouldn't pay 19.99, maybe 14.99 or 10.99... I would not use this on any of my nice knifes. maybe to re-sharpen cheep knifes... The system is flawed now that it has been cheepend down. It is not what it use to be years ago...

IBNetManMaybe you didn’t use it right. It is a great system I use to sharpen my best knives and it does a great job.

IBNetManOwned 3, bought the first in the early '90s, the latest about 5 years ago. The old ones were definitely better than current production, and there are better options available now (Apex Edge Pro), but not for this price. I have absolutely no problem putting a shaving edge on any of my knives.

The Lansky Deluxe Five Stone Sharpening System is widely available on numerous sites, and has been around for quite some time.
The final delivered cost between Massdrop, and other sites is very similar, and the historical range has basically been in the low thirties to the mid forties for several years...
For example, the delivered cost from Massdrop is currently $36.49, and most individuals will not currently pay any sales tax when purchasing on Massdrop.
Amazon offers the same product for $33.19 delivered, plus sales tax if applicable, which in my area is 6.5% additional, so $35.35 total, which is still a bit better than Massdrop, and you won;t have to wait very long to receive it. If you have Prime, you will receive it in two days with second day free shipping.
Walmart has the Lanky system for the same price ($33.19) as Amazon, but you must spend at least $35 to get free shipping, so perhaps you can add a small add on product to your order, or simply just drive to the nearest Walmart, and pick up the Lansky system for no additional cost, except again I have to pay the sales tax of 6.5% in my area, so basically the exact same price as Amazon on 5/25/2018.
In my case, I have numerous Walmart stores withing a few minutes drive of my home, so $35.35 which includes the sales tax, would be the best deal, at least for me, and I can get my $20 oil change, and pick up a gallon of milk, and some bananas while I am there. LOL
You can also find the Lansky Deluxe Five Stone Sharpening System on EBAY for $35.49, (delivered) with free shipping and you probably will pay no sales tax, so EBAY looks like the best deal if you don't want to leave your house.
I'd love to see the Lansky Deluxe Five Stone Sharpening System at a sub $30 price delivered, say like $25.00, but so far no luck.
