Gentlemen...I'm a retired vet and used both. 550 cord had its place in the 70s. We used it for everything. Technology improved and now I buy thinks for what they are made for. SERE does not stretch and is super strong. Yeah. 550 is nice for the ubiquious bracelet and u can separate it for fishing line or makeshift suture 😱 But for my hammock tie outs n tarp this is where I'd go. Kevlar rules.
"In my opinion this cordage is best suited for people in a tactical type environment who can benefit from its features. Not as much for general usage."
That's a pretty honest statement, seeing as how there are way more tacti-cool buyers than actual operators on this site.
Thanks for the question. The quick answer is HELL NO. NOT IN A MILLION YEARS.. DO NOT BUY THIS LINE FOR THE ABOVE APPLICATION. You need something much much stronger.
The Longer Answer is, It's generally recommended that a life safety line have a 10x+ safety factor. So for a 350lb person, they would need a line rated above 3,500lbs +. But each situation is unique and deserves its own safety factor. I have seen more than 25x used in some applications. So always do research before putting your life on any line. I hope this info helps. Thanks again!
