Product Description
Magna Carta’s pens certainly live up to its motto: “made for the modern-day king.” Take the Oxford fountain pen. Featuring a brass body with a 14-karat-gold PVD-coated finish, it’s a great writing instrument for anyone who considers their desk their throne Read More

I have never seen anything so tacky! Definitely belongs in the pockets of those who think gold bathroom taps and seats are a good idea. (Of course they'd want the real thing, not brass plate).

this looks like a block of gold caught a viral disease. Easily one of the ugliest pens I’ve seen. But then again, my favorite designs are either boring black or classic (eg pelikan green, pilot amber) so maybe I’m a bad person to judge.

Just curious about why all the snarky replies? I checked the discussion section to get an idea of what people who may have actually bought and used this pen previously thought of it. Instead of useful information, I found nothing here except comments about how much you all think it looks cheap. That's fine--we all have different ideas about what makes a pen look good, or not. Just because I like its looks doesn't mean that everyone else will, but that info isn't very useful to me since no one here seems to have actually seen, held or used one. I ended up having to go to pen forums to get an idea of how it works, and lo and behold, everyone who has used the pen loves how it writes and commented, too, about it writing immediately and well even after the pen had been sitting for awhile, unused. One person thought it was a bit spendy at the $200+ price they paid for it, and then adding the cost of shipping on top of that. But at $149 and free shipping here on Massdrop, the price becomes much more reasonable. Since I actually like some intricate pen designs (I have 2 Yard-O-Led Viceroy Victorians, for example), and I like the geometric, snake scale-like look of this pen, I have ordered one, and because I was able to find comments that were actually useful to me on several forums, I have every expectation that I'll enjoy writing with this pen. I'll let you know about how it looks, feels, and writes once it arrives.

Fair enough, although I don't like painting everything with the same brush, especially if I have no knowledge of it. I think we've only been on Massdrop/Drop for 2 or 3 years, and in many ways I can agree that there is a lot of expensive junk being offered. Still, we've ordered some very nice items, here, for at or below 'Zon prices, and have been very pleased with them.

IrishEyesMrsZThese days the only thing I try out are things unavailable on Amazon that maybe look interesting and have good reviews elsewhere. The real issue I have is that because it's not longer as well curated, I can no longer look at Massdrop with trust, but rather I have to do my own research carefully. (Which I always did a little of just to double check, but now it's barely worth it.) Basically it would be nice to have a place to come to that offers the unusual and high quality without having to go and find everything out about it on my own. Otherwise what's the point. (And even when they are below Amazon prices (which occurs somewhat frequently with fountain pens and a few other things, they're never cheaper than the usual suspects in those specialized worlds).

Yikes! A good example of too much too much. It reminds me of a cheapo item that would be thrown in an order as a "FREE GIFT with Purchase ".

"On the Oxford, it’s a gold-plated Bock nib in the size of your choice." Dear Massdrop, There is no choice in nib size here. All nibs appear to be #5 size nibs. Your blurb should be amended as follows: On the Oxford, it’s a gold-plated Bock nib in the width of your choice. It may sound like a small thing, but to the uninitiated nib size and nib width are two very different things.

Gold pen with a steel nib, that's ironic.
I'm reserving judgement until, if ever, I handle one. I will say this though: that's a lot of yellow.

”For those who consider their desk their throne ...” One assumes they’re using the scatological connotation of “throne,” doesn’t one?
