I'm definitely a newbie using cutters . Do you need a mat under for cutting, if so which brand name is the best for this cutter?

cballast3@cballast3 - There are mats made specifically for rotary cutting. The better ones are self healing (the cuts blend back in so the mat lasts longer) and are kind of soft to the touch. If the mat is too hard it can dull the blade faster and make clean cuts difficult as the blade will want to slide on the surface. Fiskar and Olfa make nice ones.
