Product Description
An ancient design dating back to Roman times, the friction folder has recently returned to popularity in the knife community. The design is similar to a straight razor: to deploy the blade, push on the tang Read More
So this is pretty much a folding cheese knife, not a pocket knife.
Why isn't it primarily meant to be a pocket knife? The choice of steel makes sense for a knife used around food, but not as much for a pocket knife. It doesn't have a clip. So there's two strikes against this being a typical pocket knife. Reading the ad copy, it's plain that they see a culinary purpose, it's not out of place sitting next to blah blah, it's a carbon steel very similar to what big name knife makers use in their kitchen knives, and not common at all in a folder. A folding cheese knife. Honestly I think that's a bit of a hand shandy.
Why have a folding knife to cut cheese? Why do you want to have to open and close it, why do you want to have to clean the inside of it, why do you want to have to maintain the works? Why do you want any surfaces that could retain food residue, and hence bacteria? I'll help you with this answer: you don't. You just want to cut cheese, maybe some summer sausage, maybe an apple with it. Mostly cheese. This is a kitchen based activity for most people. You really gotta ask yourself -- are you different from that? Are you a snack survivalist? Do you carry around the cheese and the cutting board and the crackers in your pocket as well, just in case you gotta go full-on snacking without warning? Maybe some pepperoni too? Must you be prepared, at a moment's notice, to provide tactical antipasti for your superior officers in the Special Snack Service?
I mean if that's definitely you, my mighty Cheese and Cracker Commando friend, then you have found your knife and this is the beginning of a beautiful chapter in your life, entitled "It All Comes Together".
I think everyone else should prolly take the $100 and go look at kitchen knives and other implements with fixed handles, or if they're more about the pocket knife aspect, go get one with a steel meant for pocket knives, and a clip to boot.
I like the burl. I like that Maserin works with burled wood where everyone else is messing around with variations on damascus. I think one day I'm going to pick a Maserin up and buy it. Not today, not this knife.
Nevermind. The world's going mad, you all might as well go mad with it and start buying folding food knives.
Emerson is making a folding steak knife.

Et tu, Ernest? The maker of the Wave, now the maker of - this?
Well, I guess if you're rugged enough to eat steak in the wilderness, but you're still worried you might accidently cut someone if you carried a regular steak knife with you, he has heard your call. Before you'd be easy prey. Now? The wolves might start to circle you but then they'll stop and one of them will go 'holy shit call it all off, dude has an Emerson.' and after a while, duly impressed with your financial prowess and kinda wishing they could hang out with you, but knowing they just aren't cool enough, they will slink off and away, hoping to find some poor bastard who bought a Maserin cheese knife instead.
reswrightNo more picnics…? Wolves know Emerson…? A Champagne sabre in every EDC rotation…? Big Macs in The White House…? In these dark times—oh planet of my birth—I know ye not!
I purchased the Dao with circuit board scales because I really liked the scales. But, the blade was S35VN. I got the Gent with Rosewood scales because MD didn't have the blue G-10 that I wanted. I almost ordered the Starfighter. I waffling about the smaller Orca. (The name escapes me.) Those scales are gorgeous, especially the blue. I cannot fathom the reason that anyone would shell out $100 for a 4116 blade. I have a couple of CS Kudus in this steel. Set me back $4.99/knife. Bad Steel + Good Scales = Bad Deal.
Leaving aside the TWO Massdrop errors (describing it as a slip joint as well as polished, which it is not), the price really isn't too far out of line, even considering the steel. The steel is perfectly serviceable, being like 420. It's on the large side, which is appropriate for its intended use and, of course, increases price. And you definitely pay for burl. It's a nice knife. Not one I need, though.
Omniseed12c27 is actually a pretty close comparison. While I’d agree that 12c27 is better, it isn’t worlds apart, either. Real-life performance shouldn’t be that different, assuming decent heat treat on both.
D2 isn’t a good comparison - very different steel with typically different usage needs in mind.
I'm not sure why you bring up friction folders in the beginning of the description, when this is in no way a friction folder. Also, it's $100 for a couple slivers of dyed burl and some rather crap steel. A tiny bit more money can buy you an S35VN blade with a titanium frame. Couple this with no pocket clip, and I've lost interest.
If this were the same price, with a pocket clip, and a VG-10 blade (at a minimum), I think I would have happily mashed the buy button.
Unfortunately I am very legally oriented. I agree the onus is on you the buyer, not Drop. However, as a business person Drop does not need to take this risk over stupidly not describing the product correctly. If someone is arrested for having a knife that is not allowed then I can assure you the buyer of the knife will think (or their lawyer will) about suing the retailer who misrepresented the knife. They probably will not win but defending this case Drop will have to pay for legal work. Why do they make themselves vulnerable, it certainly is not hard to fix this? Also Drop should put more effort into getting these ads right, they continually make me think they are a bunch of amateurs running the show. I have no idea what you are talking about when stating this is not about you, job or politics. It is about the sloppiness of getting facts straight and no one caring and this can cause a lot of problems of which I gave a few examples.
Spokes30If a retailer pays a dime for legal work to defend that case, and doesn't counter sue to recover those fees from as frivolous a lawsuit as that, then they need better lawyers lol
You had said "This is about a knife, what happens if it was about you and you were running for office or applying for a job", i was just saying that's not really an equal comparison, that's all.
I understand everything you're saying, i just think taking examples to the extreme, beyond anything that would reasonably happen, is counterproductive.
A more realistic consequence to continuing to be so laissez-faire about this situation is that Drop will lose profits if people start returning every product that doesn't 100% match a description.
If they make $15 off a sale, and it costs them $5-10 to ship it and $5-10 for an RMA, plus wages for the people working the support tickets, plus wages for the packagers and handlers on both ends.....multiplied by the number of people they sold the incorrectly advertised item to.....that's going to add up to a big loss if it's a popular drop.
This is why they almost always offer a $10 credit "for your trouble", if you're willing to just keep it.
I think the realistic consequence should be PLENTY reason to take 5 more minutes verifying facts on every drop page
It’s a beautiful knife. But why does it have to be so dang long? Almost 9 inches! I’m looking for a Gentleman’s Carry like this (wood) or the Feist (smooth, contoured), but something along the lines of 6-6.5 inches. Anything bigger and it can still appear intimidating no matter how classy it looks. 🤔
glennacThe Gent Select with the rosewood scales is rather nice, and is made of S35VN, which is a much nicer steel. Costs a bit more, but it's worth it.
bobtheaxolotlThanks for bringing that up! I heartily agree but would also add the black PVD/Rosewood Zinker Dogtooth. The rosewood on the Zinker turns a pure tactical design into a very classy gent's piece. Perhaps even the black PVD/Rosewood oddity of Dew Hara's collab here on Massdrop?
Make a point to focus on how this knife is different, being a slip joint, with a tang to push to open it.......then don't post a single picture showing the tang in the closed position?
Brilliant 😕
Thank you bladehq:

I don't know about anyone else, but i don't see straight razor type tang there, just looks like a front flipper that can't "flip" because it's a slip joint instead of a detent
Pretty wood, sleek profile, just don't understand the point of the slip joint / flipper combo
KavikI think it is a sexy little homage to picnic knives everywhere crossed with today's straight-razor fetish. Something for everyone except the Johnny-come-lately spinner fans...
Hmmmm...how do we make it spin and come within a hair's breadth of EDC Trend Immortality...? :)
