N690 is indeed like VG-10, but with excellent corrosion resistance. One of my favorite mid-range steels. Saying that it offers "supreme hardness" or "edge holding ability" seems like manufacturer dribble these days, however. N690 is usually only hardened to 58 - 60HRC. Still, it's a great steel, and can be sharpened without expensive/specialized equipment like diamond stones. Go for it!
