I've never paid duties and taxes when getting packages from Massdrop, making a lot of these drops a good deal for me (just go to my profile and have a look at my drops).
Agreed, I should not have assumed this automatically translates to great deals for all overseas buyers... Apologies for that!

Massdrop ships knives overseas. They stopped for a while, but the succumbed to the pressure from non-US buyers and started the international shipping of knives again. But apparenty they think that fixed knives are more prone to be banned than flippers, but I think it is the other way around.

I wouldnt consider the Military an upgrade. I mean, sure it’s more expensive but it’s a totally different knife. I want to know I’m at least getting a Para 3. Upgrade the steel or handles or add an additional item but changing the main item seems like they are just pushing inventory.

xformulaxI wear Large gloves and the Spyderco I carry the most is my Roadie, and I manage to use the knife functionally. Unless you're Andre the Giant, I'm guessing you can make it work.

I did the math on this one, partly because I am *so tired* of hearing people complain about Blue Boxes, but also because I was curious.
==Disclaimers:== 1) These calculations assume United States shipping. Sorry everyone else :/ 2) I looked at precisely the models offered here. Certainly, you can get the plain blade with a black handle for cheaper than any of the models listed here. So what? If that's what you want, go and buy it. Otherwise, if you're interested in one of the offered models, read on... 3) My calculation is based on "street price"; aka the lowest offer for New on Amazon (excluding one offer from a new seller that is blatantly in violation of Spyderco MAP), with free shipping. Amazon was cheaper or on-par with KnifeCenter for all models. 4) I don't take into account taxes (since Massdrop ships from New Jersey, whereas Amazon, er, usually doesn't), and I don't know where *you* live. The ~$10 of tax might tip the balance for you either way depending on place of residence.

==Results:== Not taking into account the extra bonuses, the expected value of the drop is $170.51. So, expected value ($170.51) - lowest drop price ($155.99) - shipping ($3.50) = $11.02 *predicted* savings.
I didn't do the math wrt to the bonus prizes, but intuition suggests it is insignificant for the expected value calculation.
==Observations:== 1) Save for shipping, in no circumstances are you paying more than you would have paid Amazon. 2) You have a 50% chance of paying *at least* $11 (factoring in shipping) *less* than you would have on Amazon. ~$11 is the "worst case" part of this 50%. Obviously the savings ramp up dramatically as the probabilities fall. 3) At the extreme, you have a 2% chance of saving $122.48 (if you get the fluted titanium model).
==Conclusions:== It's a statistics game. There are several variables that affect whether this makes sense for you or not. Using myself as an example, I automatically save vs buying from Amazon, since I don't pay the ~$10 tax that Amazon usually charges me. Of course, I don't get it nearly as fast as I would with Prime. But you're not paying for fast shipping - you're paying for that 50% chance of saving at least $11 (at the super low end). Not to mention the extra bonuses.
So, do you feel lucky, punk?

I know exactly where you are coming from. At this point I just want a clear response on where my orders stand and not another generic response that "we are waiting on updates from our vendor"

This drop doesn't quite make sense. If i'm interested in Para 3, i probably won't care much about Military. These are completely different category of knife and different end of size spectrum.

massdrop01I had to read it twice myself. I don't get it either. I love my Para 3 but I wouldn't ever consider the Military because it's not a knife I would ever carry.

If I'm shopping for a para 3 I'm not going to be interested in the larger "upgraded" military ones. This drop doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Like all spyderco drops on massdrop I know I can buy this knife for a few dollars more somewhere else. Thanks for the info and I'm glad this drop works for you. But for ME it doesn't make sense

The upgrades don't make sense. Many who want a para 3 to get around carry laws can't even legally carry a military.

AdamsgYeah I was kind of incredulous seeing the upgrades too. Even without the legality aspect, the Para 3 is for someone looking for a sturdy small EDC. This like hey maybe you'll get a steel upgrade OR something you're going to have to put up on r/knife_swap.

weird drop.. Manix is cool but no interest in a military.... 10 bucks less and have a para 3 to your door in 2 days on amazon.

MD has made mistakes like on the description of the drops (spyderco blade steel ) but I've never received or heard of anyone receiving counterfeit merchandise. 👍👍

Maybe. I know they work with Spyderco directly. I've been waiting on a delica drop that has been delayed and spyderco wrote a letter to massdrop and the community which was posted in the discussion.

This is where I don't understand Massdrop. These knives go for well below MSRP on other sites such as Amazon, which has the black G-10 handle model for $122 right now w/ free Amazon Prime shipping. Even with the lowest unlocked price, I don't see the appeal here.

Good luck with your single digits % chance of actually receiving that knife. More than likely going to get the black g-10 handle with normal s30v blade.
