Adding/Including Memories
I lost my dad last year (2023) and have been finding ways to include keepsakes/memories in my workstation. I've dabbled here and there with doing small woodworking projects and attempted a wrist rest from a piece of oak I picked up with him from my great uncles wood shop. I milled it to fit a 60% keyboard as I hadn't decided what keyboard I would be using it on and thought that's where most of my wrist would be in contact even typing on a full keyboard. I gave it a torched/burn appearance as I really was lost in what to do. I found an old shell casing from going hunting with my dad in my hunting pack and decided to imbed it into the end of the wrist rest so it would just have a little difference and a small story behind it as well. I have other things around my workstation from family and friends, but it just feels a little more special having worked on it and adding something small that has a memory for me to it. There are tons of products out there that are similar, made of solid wood and have glass tops...for significantly less money.
Sorry but while this is a nicely design product it's completely if not outrageously overpriced for what it is.
Neither is all that fancy, but they serve their function perfectly: I know exactly where to store and find my stuff.
I have no doubt that Massdrop wants to develop and sell desirable products. However I think that Massdrop is a lot less about the proposition that when buying from Massdrop you are using your group buying power to get exceptional value but now it's becoming "we have an audience that trusts the Massdrop name now it's time to milk that for higher profits.
I'm ALL FOR companies making profits, and I held Massdrop in high regard (and recommended it regularly to my friends) but of late I'm much less enamored and this drop is imo an example of why.
It could very well be that Massdrop is paying a high price for the product and their margin is low (like it probably is for a lot of drops that are exceptional values here...now or in the past) but even if that's the case it doesn't change the fact that this case is at least 2x more expensive than it should be based on the large number of similar products available elsewhere.
I hate to be negative but Massdrop provides these discussions to discuss this kind of thing and I hope that by pointing this out we'll see changes to bring products back in line with the promise Massdrop made when this site was formed.
Acrylic is so scratch prone that it'd look bad 1 week in, come on Massdrop, we know you can do much better.
