If I plug in headphones, will the rear RCA still have sound? ... My current solution will essentially do automatic headphone/speaker switching without fuss. Wonder if this will work that way too ...

atmosfear1cno, at least not with my unit from JDS Labs. RCA Line Out will allways be on, no switching inbetween.
