After an evening of listening, I'm a little perplexed. The only decent pair of headphones I have owned are a pair of Sony MDRV6 which I have been listening to for about 6 years now. Maybe the V6 is especially bright or something, but the HD6xx struck me as almost muted in the highs. The sound of the Senns is so much more whole than the V6, and the bass is rich and tons of fun, but there is something in the trebles that seems so distant.

CamelHumpYou sound like you need a more powerful amp. The highs on mine dont come out till midway through the middle setting on an iDSD(very powerful amp). Its crazy with these the more power you pump into them it just adds more bass until midway then highs shoot out and become full then higher you go it just adds bass again.

iCeOL8TRAmnesiaI'm only cranked about 30% on my C421, I tried turning it up like you said, and amazingly, or rather, disturbingly, the sound is so smooth from the HD6xx that it doesn't even get uncomfortable at the higher volumes... A testament to the gratifying frequency response, for sure. The V6, by comparison, starts to get uncomfortable very soon after cranking the volume from my preferred listening volume. I did some research and charted a frequency response graph between the V6 and HD650, and it definitely looks like there is a significant roll off in the highs of the 650 when compared to the V6. That being said, I did not expect the difference to be so dramatic.

CamelHumpNo its not only the frequency response graph but also the impedance the V6 are 63 ohms the HD6XX(650s) are 300ohm(middle of the road but still fairly high), but impedance isnt the end all be all its also the driver technology driver size and materials used(magnets, wire specs, windings). The 650s are much more power hungry than the V6s.
The knob on an amp is not a "volume" dial its a power dial.
Man looks like the c421 is discontinued thats too bad cause I remember reading about that one.
