@Will Since you have a sample monitor with you there at Massdrop, how about you just do a review of it personally? Or ask someone on your team to do one? It really is not hard and only takes like 7 minutes, just go watch any monitor review that LinusTechTips does and mimic him to some degree with how you do the review as reference.
I am still on fence whether or not I want to cancel this order, I know it is going to be great, but I would love to see an actual review in the format of someone like Linus, or even just some more games being played on it, cheers.

icecream345345Hey, we're working with Linus to get a review posted, we just don't know when it's going to be posted.
That said, I can probably put together a cell-phone camera quality video review later today if you can help me out a bit.
What are the main things you'd want to see covered? Any specific games you want to see played? I've got the Vast on my desk hooked up to an MSI Vortex with dual GTX1070s so I can run anything and my steam library is pretty deep. Bet Total War Warhammer looks pretty crazy at 3440x1440 and 100hz.
The main reason I haven't done a review like this is mostly because I don't have too much to say beyond what I did in my initial discussion post. After five years of researching, collaborating on, and bringing products to market, I don't think about individual features anymore as much as I think about the experience that results from combinations of features and how that balances against the cost.
At $550 there is no better gaming monitor experience. The other monitors on the market that use this panel are $1000 - $1100 and they have "gamer" industrial design (childish) and worse stands. I get that there's skepticism as this is our first monitor, so feel free to wait for the next drop at $600+, but I'm not sure what else I can say to help folks understand.
Anyway though, let me know what you'd want to see in a video (just a bullet point list of games + test links + topics to discuss would work) and I'll do my best to put something together.

WillI would love to see Doom and couple major shooters if you can. Also if you would could you also do an RTS like ashes of the singularity for contrast. Lastly how does the 100hz stand up to traditional 144hz monitors and do you notice any tearing since you only have vsync over gsync.

WillIf it gets linus aproval then no one will have the slither of a doubt of how awesome this display is.
And i would like to see how it runs Witcher 3 maxed both at native resolution and also downsized at a modest 2560x1080p maxed out. I have a gtx 1070 my self so it will be a perfect reference.

WillHey Will, any of the games mentioned below, also Total War Warhammer, and , maybe an Assassins Creed? :D
yeah just some more gameplay is all I want from you, and you can try to find dark scenes that turn to bright scenes fast and see if there is any pixel smearing? FYI i already decided to keep in at this drop. you are correct, it just doesn't get any better for this price point, still I'd like a video though :D

WillJust checking to see how the talks with Linus are going, and if there‘s any updates on when his review will be posted.
That lingering review is the only thing standing in my way from buying this seemingly stellar deal. Hope to hear from you guys soon.

RatherPeytonIn the same boat as you, really tempted to cancel. I know it is a good deal and all, but watching youtube gameplay of 35" 3440x1440 100hz it seems that many games do not scale, very few actually do from what I understand. Wondering if I should just do 165hz 27" 1440p IPS and call it a day since 16:9 is the gold standard, on the same hand some people say gaming is so much more fun in 21:9 so i dunno what to do lol

RatherPeytonIt's happening as far as we know, just taking a little while. We may have to extend the drop again because of their timing, won't impact the ship date as we've already reserved the space per my previous update.

Will> I get that there's skepticism as this is our first monitor, so feel free to wait for the next drop at $600+, but I'm not sure what else I can say to help folks understand.
At that point you won't really have a product that competes as well? Sure your price is going to be "better" still, but a CF791 with a 125% sRGB exists today at 100Hz and when deals come it is $680. It also lacks a childish stand, seems to be ok the stand, and has what looks like much better bezels. The likelihood is high that they'll be replacing that monitor model too and offering alongside Asus and Acer a 125%+ sRGB, 200Hz, maybe real HDR or maybe real 10bit support. That means you'll probably be able to grab the closeout versions for as cheap or just get one of the new even better monitors if you're willing to spend the cash.
This monitor is sort of like a Nexus phone, offering a good price by using older tech, so competes for 3-6 months. However, this monitor doesn't come out until January and by the next time another drop happens and ships those new competing monitors will likely be out too? It makes it even more strange that the price on this older tech will rise rather than remain the same.

AkkumaI mean, the monitor you're talking about retails at $750 right now so ~50% markup from this drop. You're also limited to a very tiny Freesync range (80-100Hz) so there are definitely some tradeoffs compared to this drop.
The new Asus/Acer 200Hz UWs are going to be north of $1,200 so 100%+ markup from this drop.
In some imaginary future sale, these might be competitive on value depending on your personal utility curve. If you really need the extra coverage on color and you don't care about Freesync or have a rig pushing >150 FPS on modern titles then these might be worth the extra money even at retail.
The Nexus analogy is apt I think. The spec sheet on my 6P isn't anything to be really excited about, but it's as good as whatever iphone/galaxy you want to stick it next to in practice.

jloopy212>the monitor you're talking about retails at $750 right now so ~50% markup from this drop It has been on sale several times via Massdrop and buydig for $680 and available refurbished for $550 from woot.
>In some imaginary future sale, these might be competitive on value depending on your personal utility curve. That was sort of the point, increasing the price by $50 pushes it to being less competitive based on real competition that exists today from something like a CF791, meaning Massdrop won't be giving us some bargain deal, especially when there are the other companies who essentially have done a similar thing with the same panel at the same price months ago (whether Massdrop really outclassed an entire industry by writing firmware that is a new industry standard has yet to be seen). The price on the CF791 will probably normalize at $680 and drop lower if they want to get rid of it in lieu of the new version or during sales.

AkkumaLet's make this very simple and assume for the sake of argument that the CF791 is available at $680.
$550 Vast Monitor
+ $130 Cost + 125% sRGB (vs 100% sRGB) - Freesync range to 80-100Hz (vs 49-100Hz) - LFC
$680 CF791 Monitor
If we were talking about the same price point, effectively giving up Freesync to get additional color depth would be an interesting discussion on value. For someone that does professional graphic design work and a little casual gaming on the side that might be a very nice product.
At a 25% markup though, it's just not in the same area code on value. If you're going to pay $700 for a monitor, there are way more compelling value propositions around.

jloopy212You're ignoring my comment about the price getting jacked up to $600 after this drop. The value proposition is then a 13.3% markup. The vast majority of people do not own AMD GPUs with them having only about 30% of the market, so you either get G-Sync or you disregard the tech to save money. That means the comparison for most people becomes:
- $80 difference - 1500R vs 1800R the former should be a better experience - 125% vs 100% sRGB - Awkward VESA vs better VESA - Great panel for contrast, greyscale, color accuracy, etc. vs a currently unknown - Slower response time vs faster response time (not verified yet) - Better bezels vs worse bezels - The difference between the stands
There is also the question of quality control from a panel manufacturer with a poor history from what I've read.

AkkumaI wasn't, I'm just only willing to go so far into cloud cuckoo land to try to make a basically poor monitor like the CF791 look good. You want to pretend a monitor that is selling for $550 today is actually selling for $600. Similarly, you want to pretend a $750 is selling for $680. I am willing to take exactly one of those crazy pills for the sake of illustrating how far backwards you have to contort the math to make CF791 even comparable in any way.
Anyway, you're ignoring the fact that the CF791 effectively does not have an adaptive sync option by the way - easily the most important feature in a gaming monitor. That's aside from it's crippling flicker, lack of OC, poor color, QC issues, lack of VESA mount, apparently weak stand, etc. and you know like mountains of bad reviews. But you know, keep focusing on the hard facts here like the CF791's "better bezels".
If you're willing to pay $680-$750 for a gaming monitor without adaptive sync then go for it, but it's just not possible to argue that's a good value either on a relative or absolute basis.

WillA last minute update would be greatly appreciated. I assume Linus' review is still not out (I've been checking but haven't seen any sign of it), but I've seen no mention of there being a confirmed extension to the drop as you mentioned in your previously reply to me.
Am I missing something, or will the drop indeed end within the day, even though there's no sign of Linus' review?
Still on the fence and nervously watching the clock, Peyton

RatherPeytonHey @RatherPeyton, thanks for checking in. Linus is still doing his thing, hopefully posting the video soon. They've been asking us questions that suggest they're putting on the finishing touches, but we don't have a confirmed date at the moment.
Per my previous comment, we will be extending this drop. We can extend to the end of the month, which should give Linus enough time to get his content out there.

WillThat's excellent to see. Thank you guys for being accommodating with the drop time. Monitors are long-term purchases for many of us, and since returns are difficult for both you and us, extra confidence is seriously welcome.
P.S. I assume you're going to be extending it sometime today? I just got the notification for "drop almost over".
