An excellent knife. As it's meant to be, it really is a good "all around" knife, whether I'm cutting down large piles if veg or cutting down larger pieces of meat or filleting a salmon. A little long for breaking a chicken, but I can still use it to peel turnips or mince garlic. The blade is light for its size, but is firm with a bit of spring so it feels lively in the hand, no stiff or dead. The patterning is nice on the blade, and it came quite sharp. Don't anticipate needing to sharpen it all the time, either. The handle is quite comfortable for longer sessions, and I find the bevels to be pleasant to handle and to look at. The materials seem durable, easy to clean, and provide a great grip. The saya (scabbard) works great for protecting the blade in the kitchen, but I might feel more comfortable fastening the saya to the blade if I were travelling with the knife. I am contemplating the petty knife, which just dropped today, but what I *really* would love to see would be this knife with an 8-inch blade. That would be great. This is a wonderful, but there is a lot of it, and might kitchen is crowded. This knife with an 8-inch blade would be wonderful. Great cutting abilities, great aesthetics and build, plus the quickness of a shorter blade.

Im a sushi chef and use this knife for work. I really love the design and size of it. I have this knife in my hand 10 hours a day, 5 days a week and it still gets the job done every time. I use a honing rod on it everyday and stone sharpen 1-2 times a week. The steel is really hard and very effective at cutting large fish and vegetables. I cut down around 3-5 whole salmon, 1/2 tuna, and assorted smaller fish everyday. Honestly, I do everything with this knife, even cucumbers and daikon radish. My Aogami carbon steel knife took a lot of maintenance to clean and sharpen so it wouldn’t rust, but this one is stainless and almost as sharp. I did spend about an hour stone sharpening to get it how I like it but it’s worth the effort since it’s my work knife. Took off one star because of the blade/handle gap issue, a few fish scales have gotten jammed in there and had to use toothpicks to scrape them out. Ended up using beeswax to plug the gap. Other than that, this is an amazing kitchen tool that performs like a champ and with proper maintenance, keeps up with a busy kitchen or sushi bar.

Pros:
  1. The knife arrived in one piece. I was afraid of the blade arriving detached from the handle or broken, as some reviews on here said. Fortunately, it did not.
  2. The blade is balanced-ish. With a pinch grip about an inch above the top of the handle, the knife feels equally weighted.
  3. The blade was sharp. I was able to chop tomatoes, carrots, onions, and broccoli without issues. But keep in mind I'm a layman cook.
Cons:
  1. There is a sizable gap between the neck of the blade and the handle. Large enough to let water in. I'm worried that the handle will rot over time.
  2. The blade was not as sharp as it could be. I was expecting to be able to shave the hair on my wrist with it. No dice.
  3. The Damascus finish is kind of tacky. It looks forced, instead of an organic effect of how the blade was forged.
  4. The pictures are not representative. The knife does not look as nice as it does on the drop.
All in all, I'm happy with it. But I really wish Massdrop would fix the gap beween the neck of the blade and the handle. Especially since a number of people have been complaining about it. I'm worried that the handle will rot over time.

Well after having a couple weeks or so with the knife here's my brief thoughts.
First, it looks ok but also looks cheap. It feels cheap. The handle is nothing but buffed fiberglass with this factories "signature" attempt to fake the look of wood by buffing "swirls" into the handle.
(one of) the big problems is as others have noted the handle isn't built to fit the knife properly. It's seriously confusing that a manufacturer would be unable to build the handle to fit the knife without the huge gap that this one has. As others have noted that gap is going to hold food. It's going to work loose over time as well (I think at least one person already had a separation). Simply put... cheap stuff.
The blade was dull dull dull out of the box. For a knife of this price point, with all the marketing fluff, it should have been razor sharp out of the box. It's a damn knife not a display piece. If it can't even excel at it's core function what good is it?
Lastly it's clear that the lack of honesty about the country of manufacture says a lot. This knife is NOT made in Japan. It's not crafted by Japanese craftsmen. it's not built by a Japanese company. It's made in China. It's made in a factory that mass produces knives that are made using the same techniques and materials for a number of low cost brands wishing to give the impression they are of the same quality of knifes in the "Japanese" tradition. Long story short if you can't be honest about the country of manufacturer in the details of the item, clearly up front, then I can't trust the product or the company selling it.
I hope that this trend here changes and Massdrop returns to their roots as a company that sold good trustworthy products for a good price and this trend of becoming just another avenue for lower quality Chinese knockoff products stops.

I'm not concerned about them taking the complaint seriously, at least from the perspective of returning the product (that is already under way btw). My main issue is with the direction Massdrop is going in regards to the quality of their products and the intentionally misleading marketing they are doing. Not disclosing that these are made in China, for example, is pretty bottom of the barrel if not illegal.

professional chef's opinion after using for several months. the good: it's well weighted, the handle is comfortable and is very good at resisting staining (if you don't like it (I use mostly carbon knives so I appreciate a good petunia)) the Meh: it arrived quickly and was adequately sharp upon arrival I however would not call it very sharp it is also a very hard steal meaning that it will be very prone to chipping. The Bad: sharpening this knife was not a good experience I use a 1000grit whetstone for all my basic sharpening and 6000grit to finish it off. The hardness of the steel meant that it took allot longer to get fantastic razor edge to it than I honestly think it should have. Think of it this way I am someone who knows what they are doing with sharpening, but for the average user who probably doesn't have a sharpener, while it will hold it's edge for a long time because of the hardness, it will also be very difficult for most people to sharpen it. I also am not a fan of the fake Damascus pattern, it just creates extra grooves in the steel that seems to make food stick allot more than most knives I have used. Update: the blade is TOO hard. This causes the blade to get little chips in the blade. They can be fixed but the difficult sharpening makes it very difficult

I understand you're sentiment. If its difficult to sharpen with a many strokes on a 1000grit your not removing any more material than you would a few passes on 200grit. Dont believe me?, try it on a beater knife first. Or just tell me I'm an idiot and keep wasting your time stroking a fine stone with a bevel that doesn't intersect.

eeshmailI never said I didn't believe you, infact I clearly said you were right. But if a knife can only really be sharpened by super low grit then it is made of low quality steel. I own knives that are a harder Rockwell but because it is made with a superior manufacturing process as well as higher quality steel they sharpen better.

This knife looks great but feels extremely cheap. It also wasn't very secure in the package, and the tip guard was completely off and loose in the box. I honestly don't see myself ever choosing to use this one over any of my other knives. I'm so surprised by the experience I reached out to Massdrop customer service to let them know. I just don't see how this was the product they intended to ship when they first developed it. 2 stars because it looks nice.

They do however do outstanding customer suppourt on the items. I have more than once had a bad item and they send me a new one then have me send back the bad one after i make sure its better. So far I have had no real problems.

BenjaboolyYes, I have heard that from more than a few Mass Drop customers. The truth be known, I’m just kicking myself in the ass for not reading up on their return policies before I purchased anything from Mass Drop and needed to bitch to someone . Also, like your experience, if you have a knife that has some kind of defect or just bad QC, they do give you 30 days. I do still stick with a gripe on that policy. If they are going to become a name brand knife seller( regardless of where it is made) they need to get on par with the rest of their competition. Although I’m a little new to the EDC, and folding carry knives, all that I’ve dealt with up to now have a 60 day unconditional (within reason) return policy. There is no comparison between looking at pictures, and reviews opposed to holding the knife in your hand and I think great knife sellers understand that and try to accommodate the fact that once you physically have it in hand, it might not be what you thought it was. I’m sure that Mass Drop will come along if they get enough customers that complain about their restrictive return policy. Hopefully if I buy another knife from them it will be problem free but I will continue to bitch about their policy...lol.

Overall it's a decent knife at best. The edge of the blade is unevenly ground and the grind lines on the edge slightly change direction as it get towards the tip on one side and not the other. (-1 star for this next issue alone) there is a spot 2/3rds down from the tip towards the handle where it looks like the knife got squished by something leaving an ugly divot right near the edge (it does unfortunately affect the edge) it came relatively sharp but certain spots on the knife cant even cut through a tomatoes skin without a good bit of pressure... the other star gone is from where the blade attaches to the handle (where the tang inserts) theres about a 0.010-0.015" gap on either side of the tang that I'm worried food and water will get stuck in there. Also where the tang inserts into the handle, on the top of the g10 I can distinctly see the endmill pattern and while it was being machined they changed the depth so there is a 0.004" step on the g10 with the (round) exit path from an endmill (I'm a machinist so I got all the measurements accurately with measuring tools) visually the knife is beautiful, fit and finish is sub par at best. If it came from my shop, it would never have gone out the door, seems unfinished and like they rushed it to get it out to customers. would have gladly waited an extra couple weeks for a better finish. Also the g10 handle fits strangely in hand, it doesn't feel like it sits properly when I grab it (this could be a personal thing.) Unable to hold this knife in pinch grip due to sharp g10 which is really unfortunate considering it's such a large knife and fits awkward in hand as it is.

This might be a wall-hanger knife, due to one major fit and finish issue. Pros: The biggest pro is the design. The mosaic pin with the black and red, and the choice of sanmai (whatever you want to call it) makes it very good looking. One more mention for the mosaic pin, it's a beauty. My second star is literally for the mosaic pin. The bevel is also even, and everything is mostly sanded and buffed nicely. Weight and balance are pretty nice too. Cons: Where to begin. For starters the edge is not consistent and has varying levels of sharpness. And ground one side of the blade at a 90 degree angle, and the other at a 20 degree angle, which creates a slightly lower spot where the blade starts to transition to the tip (around the reverse tanto). Aus-10 can take a very very nice edge, but the factory edge is mediocre at best, and the alternate scratch patterns on the edge will negatively affect edge holding. The handleportion along the blade side is sharp enough to create a hot spot and not comfortable if you are holding the blade in a shallow pinch grip. I wish they beveled this portion or made the handle slimmer. The handle is quite box-y feeling and it doesn't quite feel right in my hands. It's hard to 'feel' for the blade alignment if you were only holding the handle, unless you were holding it in a saber grip. It is overly square, and needs to be more rectangular (or really any asymmetrical shape) Super con: The worst thing about this knife, and why I don't think it will last, is the fit of the blade and handle. There is a gap where the blade is inserted into the handle, that I can easily spot since there is a large red flake of something inside of it, fresh out of the box. I'm sure that water and food can get trapped in this gap, and not easily cleaned out. This could potentially rust the knife inside the handle overtime. I know that SUS40/nickel silver is extremely rust resistant, but I have my doubts if it is constantly sandwiched between wet food particles. If someone from massdrop can confirm that this will not affect the longevity of the knife, then this would probably be a 3-4 star review, since I can fix all the other issues I have laid out. Neutral: No idea why the spine is crowed. It's not a 'traditional' kiritsuke. More of a western chef knife combined with a kiritsuke. The box it comes with has a really nice texture and sturdy feel, but the foam padding inside is lacking (quite a bit oversized) The bamboo handle it comes with is not a good fit, and rattles all the time. The inside is not contoured with the bevel of the knife. But it is a free sheath and it comes with a drainage hole. Pretty neutral on the sheath. Edit about 2 weeks later: I didn't like the sheath so i decided to make a leather one. (just a personal thing, nothing wrong with the free sheath). still havent used the knife yet. As i was messing around, i noticed that my blade was slightly off center and on top of that has a bow in the middle. only noticed this because because i was trying to measure the blade length with a square and noticed.... it wasnt squared. downgrading to 1 star, due to blade warp. Update: I received a replacement and both knives had the gap in the handle. At least the second one had a straight blade. Returned both. I really wanted to like this knife, but I'm a stickler for food handling and safety.
