THE PATH TO THE ULTIMATE LUXURIOUS, FUN, TRANSPORTABLE CLOSED BACK HEADPHONE Beyerdynamic started in 1924 and they are known for making the first modern headphones. Year 1937:  Beyerdynamic DT 48. “DT” stands for “Dynamic Telephone”.

Over the following 70 years, Beyerdynamic would achieve incredible feats in headphone development. From developing the first dynamic driver with over one Tesla of magnetic field strength, to summiting Mt. Beyer. Jokes aside, without Beyerdynamic, headphones and our community would not be where they are today. We’ve been pursuing this collaboration for years and we couldn’t be more excited to show you the DT 177X GO:

FROM PRO...TO GO! The DT 1770 PRO version was originally designed for mixing desks and professional audio interfaces.  The PRO version needs more power to operate the drivers and was designed to show flaws in recordings. From the Beyerdynamic website: “The DT 1770 PRO are the ideal headphones for live acts as the extremely high efficiency drivers assure a perfect listening experience in the loudest environments.” We worked with Beyerdynamic to modify their DT 1770 PRO version and make it better for our community and the kind of music listening that we do: from a sit-stand desk, at a coffee shop, or around the home.   Tuning The DT 177X GO has a slightly smoother sound, with some additional damping. Designed for the home versus a recording studio or concert venue. Power The DT 177X GO is easier to drive from low power devices, along with the added capability of balanced drive built into the earcup connector. (We’re working on a 2.5mm TRRS Balanced cable for Digital Audio Players and Bluetooth Pucks made by Astell&Kern, Cayin, Earstudio, FiiO, iBasso, Onkyo, Questyle, and others.) Here are a couple of gear combos that we have been enjoying around the office… In use with Astell&Kern XB10 (can use Single-ended 3.5mm or Balanced 2.5mm):

Our classic line of desktop amps certainly gives a great performance using both single ended (Cavalli Tube Hybrid) and balanced (THX AAA 789) outputs.  However being able to step away from the desk with just a laptop or portable player and continuing to enjoy such excellent sound quality and dynamics has been a real treat that we are happy to finally share with you!

Did you had to increase or decrease the bass with EQ? Any update, how did it performed after burn-in?

I wonder why not choose dt 1990 pro instead of this for the massdrop, i mean prices are very close to each other and the 1990 pro version is so much better. Big mistake from massdrop.

MetroidSpeaking for my interest. I went for this drop because they are a good set of closed back headphones. A good set of closed back are a hard find, and for $380, I am thinking they are probably an exceptional and unmatched buy. I would not have purchased the 1990s as I already have several open headphones in this same price range. Good Open headphones are all over, but quality closed are few and far between. So I saw this as an opportunity to get a good quality closed set at this price, which was hard to beat. Also, Massdrop has put out a lot of open headphones, but only a few good closed back, so this was an opportunity for MD to drop a really good closed back at a great price.

With Panda in the horizon, I wonder why people would still buy this.

gyroscopicsBecause some folks might prefer it? Sorry, but just because a new wireless headphone is coming out doesn’t mean it kills every other headphone. Both headphones will sound totally different; some will prefer this, others will prefer the Panda. Some people will prefer the comfort of these, others will prefer the comfort of the Panda. Some people want something balanced. Different strokes for different folks.

gyroscopicsThe problem with this hobby is that you don't get to keep just 1 pair of headphones. But I do think that it might have been a challenge debating should I buy this DT177x or not IF the Panda was released first. I try not to buy anymore headphones and also trying to clear up my inventory but it is always... "I need to keep this... and this and that...." I prefer to bring my headphones out as I usually walk to office and back. So I tend to customize the headphones to be portable. I had modified ATH-M50 by cutting the cable and make it detachable. Then the Fostex TH X-00 Ebony with mmcx. Now this DT 177x with custom cable adapter to make it a real portable headphone. I don't mind carrying portable dac/amp and I am currently enjoying the FIIO BTR-3 so I can even take calls with these headphones on the street :) FIIO BTR-3 makes everything really portable. I am still waiting for my Panda but I don't see how it will obsolete my existing collection of headphones. I still like to listen to my Sony MDR-Z1 and Sennheiser HD820 when I am in the office. I do believe Panda may obsolete some of my IEMs though.

Okay I could do with a little advice  I currently have a pair of Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro and a pair of Sennheiser HD6XX.  I did have the AKG K7XX but I sold them as they didn't really do a lot for me.  Currently just have them running through a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 interface and into my PC but I plan on replacing that with the Schiit Modi/Magni 3.  I like the Custom One Pro sound but they seem awfully lacking in detail since picking up the HD6XX. Also love the build quality and general feel of the Beyerdynamics. I have a lot of awkward piercings, stretched ears and a mohawk so I have trouble finding headphones that are comfortable, but these fit like a dream.  I'm still looking to hang onto the HD6XX but I think I want something to replace the "punchy" sound of the Custom One Pro, just with a little more detail, and for when I want something skull-rattling. I don't find the HD6XX to be satisfying in that area, as amazing as they sound everywhere else.  I was dead set on the Fostex TR-X00 Mahogany until seeing the release of the DT 177X.  I'm still a little swayed towards the TR-X00, especially with the current EU shipping drop.  Factoring in tax and shipping, both headphones come in at around roughly the same price, with the TR-X00 being around £35-40 more expensive.  Any chance of a little advice as to which way to go?  Thanks in advance!

How do the DT990's stack up to the other Beyer's you've tested?
PapptonaThe 770, 880 and 990 are all essentially the same drivers with minor tweaks. If you don't mind the Beyer spike they can be quite enjoyable. I only have the DT990 around at current (T1 replaced the 880 and I never bought, but have used, the 770). I like the 990 for certain genres, particularly those with a lot of kick drum or bass lines. I can't say I would recommend it to anyone who either hasn't heard it first, or buys from somewhere with a solid return policy, it won't be everyone's "cup of tea".

JerryLeedsThey'll correct it for free. That happened to me too, actually. They sent me out a new one fast and when I got it, I sent the other cable back. I'd like to hope it's not the diagram as it's the exact one CeeTee provided prior. Either way, just reach out to em and they'll straighten it out. Een using mine balanced since I got them without issue since then.

At $450, skip these. Spend a wee bit more for the fostex x00 ebony. They sound better in all aspects and the build is better. Kinda regret buying the Beyer. They're not bad headphones bit they sound wooly and not crystal clear. Plus you don't get great sub bass even with a good seal. I will be keeping them as a $380 beater, ha.

Hey, sorry for the late reply. Personally, I say go with the 177X. Sonically, they have more in common with the 1770 but are a bit smoother and less edgy overall. They are also internally balanced already so you can get a balanced cable (I went with Periapt) later down the road if you so choose. The added sheepskin pads are also super swank and much preferred over the typical Beyer velours and leatherette IMO and help smooth things out even more so while giving your ears more room to breath. You lose the case and coiled cable but I don't find that to be a big deal. I picked up a Slappa case and it holds my cables and extra pads just fine and is small enough to fit in my work bag. Also, with these they have a lower impedance, so they actually are good on the go and don't need a lot of juice to get close to their max potential. I use mine in the office and travel with them frequently and they do a damn fine job of not letting noise in or out with the sheepskin pads. The Beyer velours have always been leaky for me no matter what and even with my T1p's, I have flat sheepskin pads with them as well. While many love to nitpick, these serve their purpose of being a good isolating, great sounding, portable closed back headphone as advertised. They're also built quite well so I don't know where the build quality complaints are coming from. They're literally built just like every other higher end Beyer and have less plastic pieces than even my more expensive T1p. Personally, once you get a case for them and swap to the sheepskin pads, they've become my fave office pair next to my Elegia and Cascade's and sonically slot themselves somewhere between those two. Really just depends on the day and music choices of which I prefer. But, the fact they stay in constant rotation instead of sitting in a box in my closet says it all to me, really. Even more so, they sound good powered from just my Pixel in a pinch, or via BT from my ES100 or xDSD, my O2+SDAC at work, and sound great balanced out of the THX789 and even more wonderful with tubes from the CTH or ZDT Jr. They're not amp picky at all and just sound good hooked into anything. Which, for a set of 32 ohm cans geared towards mobile use, says a lot considering Beyer snobs only think they NEED to utilize their high impedance driver versions is just nonsense. But knowing they can reach a bit further out of desktop units is just a cherry on top in the grand scheme of things. Lotsa words, but hope that helps ya some.

seconded on the fostex hinges and the lack of sense that the DT177x are going to suddenly break themselves

sooooo. these have basically no sub-bass compared to the TH-X00, and can't be EQ'd to fix this. It's just not there.

The big problem I have with the AH-D2000/D5000/D7000/TH-600/TH-610/TH-X00/TR-X00/TH-900 is that they all have this TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE design in the hanger which is honestly rather fragile and breaks eventually under normal use.

Hi all, it’s my first drop with (Mass)Drop and was wondering if they usually give feedback on the production of the products? Things like, are they still on schedule? If they do, do you expect any news soon? (I’m starting to be excited and hope they won’t be too late!)

Yes I received the email. And I'm glad that it's going well with production and distribution. Hopefully it arrives on the same day as my dt48 200 ohms.
I'll own up to being critical of drop delays without notice or clarification a time or two, but that shouldn't preclude a compliment when things are going well. Great to hear that things are on track and the update really is appreciated!

Anyone got theirs yet? Wanting to hear about how well they perform with the THX 789 or other amps. I dropped *ba dum ts* out of this drop just before it ended... I guess I'm waiting to see what the public opinion on this headphone is like. I already knew it was similar to the 1770 Pro but... with the delay on balanced cables and zeos chucking his pair in a yard sale... I believe these might not stick in the long run
