Hey everyone,
This knife represents another first for our Massdrop knife collaborations, in that we have never before released the same model in both frame lock and liner lock styles. This idea was inspired by Brad's own custom knife lineup, in which he frequently offers the same style of knife both with and without handle scales.
Aside from the addition of the liner lock style, another similarity between these production knives and Brad's custom creations is the materials used for the scales: G-10, carbon fiber, and rosewood. While he does use G-10 and carbon fiber quite often, Brad is more likely to use jigged bone or antler on his custom knives. That's not feasible in a production setting, but we have added another natural material instead - the rosewood scales that have been very popular on the Gent Select and Kabuto folders.
Brad has been great to work with and it's always a pleasure to visit his table at shows. Here's a photo of us checking out the Dogtooth frame lock production samples at GX (the USN's 10th annual Gathering) in Las Vegas last month.

As always, a few housekeeping notes before we get started: * The drop will be live at 6:00am on Friday, October 12th at 6:00am PT. * The price will be $99.99 for G-10, with upgrades ranging +$5 to + $20. * This drop is limited to 1200 total serialized units. * Serial numbers will only appear on units ordered during this pre-production drop. * Serial numbers will be randomly distributed, with no reference to the order/time that you join the drop.
Carry On -- Jonas
PS - Some of you may have seen that Brad is based in Florida, which just got hit by Hurricane Michael. We've been checking in with Brad - he and his family are okay. Our thoughts are with those who are in affected areas.

What kind of threadlocking agent will be used on this knife if at all? I had a very unpleasant experience with the terzuola knife drop also manufactured by WE knives which ended in a knife stuck mid-assembly when all I wanted to do was remove a pocket clip and ended up stripping screws
JonasHeineman
Hoping I can get on a contact list in the event the left-handed run happens, thanks!
I really want a Rosewood handle and satin blade. Maybe i'll buy 2. The orange with satin and the rosewood with black, then swap the scales. Just need to find a Harley guy to sell the Black and Orange one too :)
$99.99? for what?
mu_just_me
Are you serious, do you not recognize that this is a competitively priced knife?
Anyone also thought this would look even cooler if it was a front flipper?
ManaScream
That would be absolutely righteous, and the Dogtooth tang already overlaps the stop pin when opened, so having the tang slightly longer there shouldn't cause any problems. And the jimping is perfect, it wouldn't need a lot of metal to create a workable tab.
Would buy a version with Rosewood and a Satin blade finish.
MaxwellDemonic
You can buy a satin + g10 version then request @joelellis

To make some rosewood scales for the knife
Since this keeps getting mentioned, @dead.fox posted some great comparison pics https://www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-x-brad-zinker-dogtooth-liner-lock-knife/talk/2228772
There are 165 days until 29th March 2019.
Full stop. Hard pass, you guys shouldn't make this into a go-fund-me. You want to collect $120,000 a full 5 months+ in advance? Really?
Load 1 more comment
5 months is just too far out imho, but more power to you for getting other people to join
I was was wondering why I could get the Titanium frame lock right now and have to wait 5 months for a G-10. I guess I am going to take my chances. A serial number doesn't matter to me unless it was a limited edition. The frame lock and the Leek CF should tide me over until then.
@joelellis will you be making scales of them if they do sell 1k+ copies? If you fo then I’m in!
ManaScream
I certainly could

Happy face x3
I'm also one that's very keen for this knife, but the fact that it doesn't ship till mid next year really is a deal-killer for this one! Great to get something a few steps above the Leek but without speedsafe so that it can be allowed in Australia, The knife is amazing and well priced.. but that lead time is just massive! Just announce it closer to the ship date or something!

Come back in April next year, it will be available and ship straight away. A few weeks after the first batch gets shipped out they always open a drop back up again (on their collaborations).

I feel for you guy's down under and my Brethren in Canada and elseware who have Government agencies trampling on your rights. I'm glad the US doesn't right now but, that could change.

1. As said above, very Leek-like---IMO and the minor differences notwithstanding, too much so for comfort. 2. As also said above, having to wait 5 1/2 months for shipment is just crazy. Not shipping promptly isn’t acceptable. 3. As also said above, too bad you’re not making this one available with CF scales and black blade.
The bottom line is that 1 + 2 + 3 = not adequately attractive for me to pull the trigger on this one.
I would be in for sure, but I am way too inpatient to wait such a long time for shipping.
Very attractive knife at a great price.
I love this knife but having to wait until March 2019 for shipping is crazy
Malidfa
Lol. I could make the knife faster. Whatta joke
Malidfa
Well you're waiting for the entire production process, and shipping, not just shipping.
There is no clip side picture of the orange G10. Is the clip satin to match the blade? @JonasHeineman
Why is the orange one calling me? I don't really like the color, maybe it's the standout quality. I don't know but I think I'm in for the orange G10
Sigh... I JUST got the frame lock and you do this to me? Ugh.
My wallet hates you.

It's we knives. The action will be nearly perfect. I already ordered the rose wood. And I may keep both. Not sure yet.
AtticusVulpes
I just ordered the CF. I’ll probably sell the frame lock in the mean time. Just hoping the liner lock action is as good as the frame lock. I’ve never experienced a liner lock from WE.
This design looks pretty awesome and polished all around. I had a massdrop exclusive urban trapper previously and really enjoyed Brad's design philosophy; this knife looks to fit my personal preferences even better (not a huge clip point fan, drop point or wharnies for me), and although Boker's quality control was decent enough on the urban trapper, I'm excited to see what WE can do on this one. Opted for the rosewood/black stonewash combo because it kind of looks like a firearm with a well-loved parkerized finish.
I also hope they make a mini/petite version of this someday, that comes in somewhere in the 2.75 to 3 inch blade length, because that would be nice for carrying in more formal situations.
Looks like a Kershaw Leek.
Lt.AldoRaine
If it were as thin as a Leek I would pick one up :)
Lt.AldoRaine
Like your moniker!
Is it solid carbon fiber or a g10 laminate? Curious that the weight specs are the same for both
Logan96
Solid carbon fiber!
Just a reminder that all flipper style knives are illegal to import into Canada. The CBSA (Canada Border Services Agency) will confiscate any flipper knives as prohibited weapons (Custome Notice 18-01, Section 2b). https://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications/cn-ad/cn18-01-eng.html

Just another reason to not move to Canada. Thanks!!

They're just emulating what they see other countries' agencies doing.

I see that I am not alone in thinking about a Leek when I saw this. I feel no allure from this one. No siren call. I already have several S35VNs. Y'all need to excuse me. I gotta take a Leek.
Before you guys put this into production, can you make the choil just a tiny bit bigger so it works as a finger choil? It’s a glaring flaw in an otherwise perfect knife.
Many thanks.
Load 8 more comments
PS - Making the choil smaller also makes the flipper tab larger and changes other geometry (like the plunge lines). It's not really a simple change. And the total net increase of edge length available here is like... maybe 2.5mm on a 77mm edge, so about 3% longer. I'm not really sure that justifies making all the other necessary changes. Is there some reason other than total edge length that makes you think a smaller choil would be better?
JonasHeineman
A no choil option or very small sharpening notch helps to stop things being caught there when cutting, especially under duress or in a hurry.
I wish the CF model came with the same color hardware as the black G-10 model.
Bassturd
That might look pretty good. FWIW, we thought about it, but didn't for two reasons:
1) The blue hardware with black G-10 was done to match our past Zinker exclusives (Urban Trapper and FR). 2) Other than this blue/black model, the hardware on all models is matched to the blade finish.
Thanks for the feedback, always interested to know the combos folks would like to see.
Sweet! I missed out on the original Dogtooth. I’m very happy to see a good variety of options, now I just gotta decide on which one...
This is beautiful and I am in mourning that it's limited to right-handed carry without a reversible option for lefties. :(

That’s not true at all. Brad makes custom knives for lefties all the time. My father carries one. Whether or not the knives are produced with an option for left-handed deployment is up to Massdrop, not Brad.
TheOtherPeyton
Thank you! Very glad to hear that; I couldn’t find any options on his website when I looked.
This is right up my alley. I’m a sucker for a good Wharncliffe blade in awesome steel. I’m even digging the orange G-10.

Dont stop, just please start including lefty's more often.
Why couldn’t you have slapped some clip holes on the presentation side for us southpaws?! 😭

Unexpected and fantastic news! You have my purchase
If you made it reversible or a leftie version I’d be in right now
Looks cool, is this significantly better than getting a Leek? Similar blade profile and function.

Assuming the knife is up to Zinker construction QA, absolutely yes. A D2 composite or CPM154 Leek goes for $65-75 USD, so we're talking about a 30% upgrade.
I love my CF Leek but there are problems. First, if you get anything but the base 12C28N, the Leek's tip is crazy fragile
Second, the Leek's QA, especially on heat treat, isn't all that great. I've had 2 CPM154 Leeks and the edge retention was notably different. Not to mention that the grind on the first one was a good .5mm off center, and not at all straight. And neither is anywhere close to the edge retention of my Bark River.
For the most part the liner lock is fine, it does get a bit stubborn only once in a while. The biggest advantage of the positron over the Leek is that the handle scales have a bit more volume making it more secure/comfortable to hold.
