Thanks to Massdrop for making this happen, I've been admiring the Enlightened Equipment Revelation for a while now and have been waiting for a deal.
I just wanted to write out my thought process and hope that others may be able to adjust it for their situation to see if this deal makes sense for them.
I'm looking at the short/regular version
On EE site the 850 down, 20degree bag weighs 18oz, costs $265 + $13 shipping= $278
On Massdrop the 800 down, 20 degree bag weights 21.2oz, costs $215 + $20 tax in CA + unknown shipping
$278 - $235 = $43
I am willing to pay up to $10 to save 1oz, and in this case the weight difference is 3.2 oz, so I'm willing to spend an additional$30 or so. $43-$30=$13.
If the shipping for Massdrop is close to $13 it'll be a wash and I should probably spend more to save the 3oz.
If you don't pay taxes on Massdrop orders that's a big plus or if you're sensitive to price and are willing to spend less than $10/oz of weight saved this Massdrop deal might be good for you
Mass_DropperThanks for doing the math. Here's a few more details: We offer free shipping for US members, and discounted shipping for international members. Tax is not charged in 48 states (only CA and NJ). Also consider that our quilts have an extra 5% down fill.
Mass_DropperYour math is correct for the short/regular, which is what you're looking at for yourself. For context, we expect about 5% of members to want quilts in that size. So, for the far more popular regular/regular, the 20 degree Revelation is $270, and the weight with 10d shell and liner is 19.4 oz or 21.4 oz with 20d all around.
Mass_DropperIt is a tad hard to make a weight comparison with EE sites spec'd bags, as this drop is using 15d fabric, and 800 down fill (+5% fill as mentioned by Danny's comment above)
octavecatIf you buy direct from EE you'll still supporting them. I'd go to EE if I were you. I don't think Massdrop will have a problem selling these. My situation is opposite yours; I live in Minnesota, so by going through Massdrop I avoid the tax I'd normally have to pay :-)
Yes, I'm well aware :-) With regards to tax, it doesn't matter where the product is manufactured, but where the seller resides. I think NJ & CA residents pay tax on Massdrop items, but no other states. EE is a Minnesota company, and I live in Minnesota, therefore I pay tax when I order from EE, but not Massdrop. Hope that clears it up :-)
