I'm torn on if I want these or not...
Everything about them seems tempting based on reviews but 7 Benjamins is hard to swallow for just sound for me personally. I got a Creative X7 Limited driving a AKG 7XX. On my computer, I mainly (in descending order) game, listen to symphonic metal + amazon/netflix movies when I'm too lazy to go to the home theater. Maybe this is something more suitable for a headfi post but can someone help me understand what sort of net benefits I would see?

Chairman_WangBias note: I didn't like the sound signature of the AKG 7XX and sold mine on ebay. I have (and enjoy) the HD-6XX, HE-4XX, LDC2c, and the TH-X00 (modded).
For gaming, the sound stage on the 7XX is still the best of everything I've mentioned and from what I've read also better than Focal headphones.
Personally, I bought the Elex for music, I am also a gamer but didn't care that much about a huge sound stage. The Elex are supposedly an upgrade to the HD-6XX (similar sound signature) which are REALLY good, especially with a good amp. Since Focals are also known to scale up with good equipment, there is a lot of fun to be had in finding how different amp and headphone pairings can really make your music COME ALIVE! That will mean different things to different people but having good headphones opens up more possibilities. I've had music bring tears to my eyes that never used to do that for me. I've started listening to a much wider variety of music, classical and jazz are so much better now, I used to be bored with them. I still listen to rock, metal, and share your enjoyment of symphonic metal.
Focals are also supposed to be really good with detail which I find fun and interesting while also being fun.
Those are the reasons why I joined this drop.

loadexfaIt's an interesting discussion, I'd like to join. From what I've been reading the Elex are more of an upgrade to the HD600 than the HD6xx (which are most probably a rebranded HD650). This puts them in a less bass heavy section of the headphone market. It would be very interesting to see what you think of them after you get them, especially compared to the HD-6xx and LCD2c (which I'm also contemplating).
How would you describe the difference between HD-6xx and LCD2c?
PS May not be relevant but I mostly listen to electronic music

AncientWisdomI am using both the 6XX and LCD2C right now.
You will love the LCD2C with electronic music. Somehow, sound from youtube sound better using this too. The only reason I aware that I am listening though a headphone is because it weight too much.
But I am using 6XX at work because it is more comfortable.

AncientWisdomThe HD-6XX is the same as the HD-650 when it comes to sound, the only differences are cosmetic and the stock cable.
I haven't heard the HD-600, but what I've read matches your comments, less bass than the HD-650. That's interesting, if the Elex is more similar to the HD-600 it may not be as much to my taste as the Elear. On the other hand, I also like variety so I'm not going to stress it. I can try an Elear at a local store and if I like them better, I'll sell the Elex on eBay.
For some pop and jazz music the LCD2c is cleaner and crisper. Other times I find them a tad boring and switch back to the HD-6XX's but I don't remember which specific music. Both are pretty laid back headphones which is my preference. If I had to pick one pair, it would be difficult but probably the HD-6XX's. They're good with everything and are a really great value for the money, even if you pay the retail price of the 650's. They are also great with just about any amp (of course they get much better if the amp is better).
I haven't done electronic music in a while, I used to find it fatiguing. That was before I had good quality equipment so I should probably give it another shot. I have tried listening to rap and found the bass with both the HD-6XX and LCD2c to be really good. LCD2c struck me as cleaner with bass but either way I enjoyed listening to rap with both.
Speaking of music I hadn't listened to in a while, a couple days ago I listened to some Beatles albums with my HD-6XX's. HOLY CRAP! I haven't listened to the Beatles in like 5 years or so. There is so much more there in the music that I never heard before. This is one thing to note, "older" music (80's or possibly 70's and older) tends to get much more interesting with a good setup. From what I've read modern mixing is more flat and just makes everything LOUD. The additional details and depth in older music is really cool.

loadexfaI've been distracted and never got back to this but thank you for breaking down your observations to me! I think given that I prioritize gaming, I'll wait until a new crop of headphones come up. With proper surround sound getting back in the focus, I'm curious how hardware will change (if at all) with the new software stuff going on.
Quite honestly I hate trying to find the right headphone/amp pair (main reason I got the X7 so I can have a handy dandy all in one but ironically its surround sound processor is weaker than the old X-Fi line) so I wouldn't say I like that part. :P

JVUSASuggestions will depend on your price range and I can only speak to the HD-6XX (don't have Elears, waiting on Elex). I would spend $500 at a minimum based on the great combos I've heard.
A couple of great amp options are the Cavalli CTH (still going for another 10 hours) and the La Figaro 339 (drops periodically). The Bottlehead Crack is another option that is regularly recommended. I found it too forward and muddy. It should be less muddy with the speedball option but I haven't had a chance to hear that.
So far my favorite dacs are the Schiit multibits. I have only heard the low end (Modi Multibit) and best (Yggdrasil). They are both great, the Yggy is CLEAN among other things. Not quite ready for that purchase yet so I'll have to be happy with my Modi Multibit. ;)
All of this is what appeals to my ears, I highly recommend trying before making a purchase or you may end up needing to return some items or sell on eBay both of which will waste some of your money. I've wasted my share of money but I'm slowly getting better about trying equipment. Oh wait, I joined the Elex drop, guess I still don't follow my own advice!

loadexfaHow did you go with the Elex?

AncientWisdomHey, it's been forever, haha! Short answer, the Elex are a great value, especially on sale. After hearing the Clears at CanJam, I sold my Elex but the money to pick up Clears never quite showed up. So I bought the Elex again during the sale last month and am very happy to have them back. They are a great contrast to my Sennheiser (6XX, 800) and ZMF (Atticus, Autuer) headphones if you like variety. Focal definitely has a house sound, lively, a bit in your face, grabbing you by the ... shirt. I think they would work well for electronic music if that style of presentation is what you want. Some find them shouty or bright with a metallic tone, I think the right amp tames this tendency but even good synergy doesn't mean they will suit your preferences. I have found them to be amp-picky, for my taste they are great with the La Figaro 339, Stratus, and Euphoria. Was surprised that I found the Utopia dead/boring from a Manley amp at CanJam, I still need to try the Utopia with a better synergizing setup. I wrote some more details in this post: https://www.superbestaudiofriends.org/index.php?threads/elex-and-eclair-discussion-thread.6216/page-5#post-329165 I'm also working on a write-up about the Euphoria amp to be posted on SBAF which will include Elex impressions.
