anyone ever compare these to the focal elear or senn 800s? just wondering how they punch above their price points or is the SQ truly better for many cans over the $1k mark vs these (you get what you pay for...) i did have the sony z1r but sold them (too expensive imo) and also just sold off the senn 650s due to that 'veil'....would be for rock, blues, jazz, classical etc. i'm also considering beyerdynamic 1990

_zegnaHD800 S? Or HD800? I have the HD800 S and I bought a pair of these used on ebay for around this same price ($480 if I remember right) and the HD800 S's have much more soundstage, and better clarity, with a very even frequency response from (to my ears) 16 hz up to 16 kHz where it has a very natural rolloff (as it should) These however have more bass, without losing too much clarity (very little in fact) and are more pleasant overall to listen to due to the "mostly" even freq response down to 200 hz, where to my ears there and below these have more power by a little bit, mostly due to the density of Ebony and the closed back design. These are also much easier to drive than the senn's for what it's worth. An amp is still mostly required but I find it's much less picky about amp choice, in fact my Schiit magni 2 uber sounds quite nice with it but I find the tube amps do it better justice and compliment them well, where the HD800 S's are very specific on amp choice and there's only two amps that I have that my pair likes (sennheiser hd800 combo amp and WA7) Don't forget about the fact that these will provide much more sound isolation than the open back design headphones if that's something you care about.
Obviously amp choice is subjective but its what I find works best for me, results may vary.

_zegnaFor curiosity, what did you find veiled and why?
_zegnaThe HD 650 haven't had the "veil" in a long time. Did you have an older pair? What color was the driver/baffle assembly?

Assimilator702well that's your op, not mine.....cans and our prefs is so subjective isn't it, very personal...yes i had the newer drivers....they were ok for what they were but didn't knock it out of the park for me. like anything: better to pay more for better SQ...if i were more into cans i'd be looking at the clear. but i'm not using cans much these days, so these ebonys will suffice for now (heck they're not even getting much listening time). funny but more and more i just prefer speakers just for not having anything in or on my ears.
