You told us there were only 5,000 units that would ever exist, and it was a limited drop, and you keep extending the drop, and now the limit is gone? Confirm things with your partners and logistics department before you announce it.

LordByronThere sure seems to be a lot of confusion here on how Massdrop works:
1. a limited drop means that a given drop is maybe limited, meaning that it could get increased if there is demand and/or opportunity to make/get more 2. a limited drop does not mean that new drops can't happen in the future 3. extending a drop does not mean that the item will be shipped later, it has no effect on when you get your item 4. extending a drop means you get to hold on to your money longer, and with an extended drop you have the option to drop out, which goes away once the drop closes 5. extending a drop and getting more buyers does not result in a lower price
So there is no real reason to complain about a drop being extended. Unless you are hoping to get a limited item that no one else can ever get and you can sell and make money or you just like to feel good that you have something that other people can't get. Personally I just want to get a product I want and I am not hung up on who else gets it.

LordByronNo one ever claimed that this was a limited edition model, it was obvious right from the start that they would make as many of these as they think they can sell, and keep making/dropping them until they stop selling. I'm not even sure this is guaranteed to be a massdrop exclusive product and may be available through other channels in the future.
They did initially state that this first drop would be limited to 5000 units, but if that limit was ever mentioned in the drop itself it must have been removed very early on. I saw the drop within a few hours of the start and don't remember any limit being specified.

JaggiYeah, there was a 5,000 unit limit for the first couple of hours and then they removed it. And this one is at least a Massdrop Exclusive, it was a collaboration project. Not much different from the K7xx. I've been on Massdrop a good while, and I've never seen them extend a drop to milk it like this. Usually they'll just drop it again, but at less of a discount, to make more money.

LordByronThere was no 5000 listed initially (I joined within minutes of the drop opening). The 5000 figure came from outside forums quoting Massdrop reps.

LordByronYes you're right. Checking the Head-Fi announcement thread again it is made clear on the very first page that the headphones were a collaborative project and will remain a Massdrop exclusive. Don't know how I missed that earlier.
I've seen several drops extended, most commonly drops that hadn't quite reached the minimum number of purchasers required. The TH-X00 Purpleheart drop however was extended several times in circumstances not dissimilar to this.
If it's not going to delay shipment or adversely effect existing purchasers I don't have a problem with a drop extension, but having said that if the AUD falls much further against the USD before this drop ends I'll give serious thought to dropping out!

LordByronthe other exclusive headphones (k7xx, th-00, etc) are still selling at the initial price offering. sales are high, they are not milking anything. if the headphones were already made the drop would have ended already. it makes sense since the headphones havent even been manufactured yet. sure they are set to make more money but the need is there. and its not affecting the delivery date. win win on both fronts.
