Received my he 4xx yesterday.. just a ugly scratch near the plug of left phone ... ok thats all of the negatives I can live with.. The rest ist stunning solid, well made without further flaws Sound.. still burning in ... a bit metallic sounding in the first hours .. hope this will be gone soon Subbass .. weak (hope burn in will better up this aspect) the rest of the spectrum is simply wonderful Chapeau!! Very good phones
In comparison: My Audioquest Nighhawks play imho a little better for me. My HD650 is clear beaten by the HE 4xx.

austriandudeSorry to hear about yours arriving scratched. Mine now have the Hifiman suggested burnin time on them. I find hi-res material has more bass and sub bass response, 16bit, not as much -depends on recording. But ironically, even tho I've played 4&5 string bass a long time in bands, I don't listen to a lot of bass-heavy music. When a well-recorded track has a lot of low E or B string, to my ear I think 4XX renders it accurately. But we all have a sound profile we like best. I think 4XX is overall pretty flat, slightly warm, but others may disagree. The upstream components and recording matter so much in this regard. Coming from HD650 I don't doubt they sound a bit metallic. Nighthawks are a different approach for sure and I like them, too. MD/HFMN 4XX are pretty good planars for $170 tho. I'd like to have $800 or $1800 planars but... can you float me a loan lol?

austriandudeAnd they're not as sensitive as their specs in practice. The MD description of "you can play these thru your phone" and "you don't need a fancy amplifier" is a bit of a sales pitch exaggeration. IMO, they DO need an amp or the sound will be lifeless, unappealing, and response will suffer when without transient headroom. There will be little to no bass "attack" without adequate powering. Quality amplification will result in bass notes that have attack/bite, that sustain as well as the bass being played, and decay realistically, without robbing from other spectrum range to their diminishment.

austriandudeAmplification may not be an issue for you since you own HD650 but I thought I'd throw this out there to others as it relates to bass response and for those thinking about buying 4XX. In addition to driver and tuning, reproducing bass and sub bass requires power no matter the volume SPL or the sound will be anemic. And it's an open hp which at this price usually won't have it as easy as a closed back for bass. I get a kick out of the smiling woman listening outside to open backed 4XX in MD description. She better have a good DAP in her hand, lol.

...Power is not an issue, a SS like Corda Jazz ff drives them adequate enough. Dac and sources .. nönö proper chain is a must. Anyway....its a top headfone with acouratesse, sparkle and voices goin under the skin. Stunning bargain and nobrainer.
