Hi Everyone,
We have an update on the production status of the Massdrop x MiTo GMK Laser Custom Keycap Set. MiTo has received the latest samples of the alpha colors and the color scheme is not matching what he envisioned. We wanted to give everyone a heads up that this delay in color confirmation may cause a delay in our estimated ship date.
MiTo knows there are very high expectations for the Laser set, and he wants to make sure the colors are up to the standards of the community. Because of this, MiTo (located in Brazil) is on his way to Germany to confirm the alpha colors in person. New techniques and color matching procedures are taking place right now, in order to ensure an exact match to his vision and the product designed.
Once the finalized colors are up to the standards we are all used to, MiTo will go ahead and authorize manufacturing.
We’ll provide an update in late April with the latest information.
YanboWuGood on Mito for going through this to make sure his vision is accurate, we get what we paid for. I know GMK Solarized just came in, and the modifiers on that were dark as hell, much darker than they should have been. Nobody wants something like that to happen with Laser. And I see a few samples in there that would be similarly dark, so I'm glad we're avoiding them as much as possible.
YanboWuI completely expected this after he said that production of alphas hadn't started yet due to color issues a couple weeks ago. It's super cool he's flying out to Germany though and I think it's awesome how passionate MiTo is about his projects :)
YanboWuMaybe this is better directed at Mito but why on earth were you sending artisans makers color chips to match with if they were not even the correct color?
YanboWuJust want to say. Please add some context to the images to let us know what is going on since slapping photos of samples doesn't really say anything. A line or two is fine. Each of us have a different monitor so we are probable seeing different things. Is there a "correct" sample in the bunch of photos at all? Or was the problem that before the GB starts Mito received a set of correct samples and now GMK is producing another samples that do not match the original samples colour palette?
Not sure if it is my monitor or is it just me but I think the first photo looks good, at least the best of the bunch. The purple contrast with the alpha and modifier, with the hot pink accent. Not trying to say which is the "right" colour, just my opinion.
MechChia> Is there a "correct" sample in the bunch of photos at all?
Yes, as Yanbo clearly said the only color off is the alphas.
> Or was the problem that before the GB starts Mito received a set of correct samples and now GMK is producing another samples that did not match the original samples pallet?
Not the case, don't even know how you came up with this read.
> Not sure if it is my monitor or is it just me but I think the first photo looks good, at least the best of the bunch.
Yup, however in real life the alphas are off and we will perfect it.
MiTo > Or was the problem that before the GB starts Mito received a set of correct samples and now GMK is producing another samples that did not match the original samples pallet?

I came up with that conclusion because I thought that you already have at hand a "correct" colour samples because of the comment on the colour chip for the artisan which I assumed was also made by GMK.
Well... This was not exactly the focus of the point I am trying to bring. It was that there needs to be a caption on the photo if not I am interpreting that the first photo was the initial samples, the correct samples(the one you sent to artisan), and the others are the samples you are getting now which does not match the "original" samples(the first photo).
YanboWuAppreciate the update and Mito taking the time to go to Germany in person. I am perfectly fine w a delay if that means accurate colors. We've seen what happened with some other GMK sets recently where the end results were nowhere near the renders and that is much more dissapointing than a delay. If anyone is complaining about delays, just look up the images of the sets I'm referring to on geekhack for GMK Plum or Solarized Dark.
TheEerieColdAs it turns out maybe getting all exalted and calling people out on not doing their job properly before being fully aware of the situation wasn't the best idea ey?
MechChia> I thought that you already have at hand a "correct" colour samples
And so far I do indeed, for all colors but alphas.
> I am interpreting that the first photo was the initial samples, the correct samples(the one you sent to artisan), and the others are the samples you are getting now which does not match the "original" samples(the first photo).
I understand your interpretation but it's incorrect. The photos aren't presented in any particular order, it doesn't make sense to label them either because these pics are just arrangements to display that we have multiple samples on hand and I'm not happy with the alphas in particular.
As for your concern regarding artisans, I didn't send wrong/unconfirmed colors to partners at any given moment. We don't even have alpha colored artisans to begin with and as far as I know each one of the artists matched colors to mods and accents to the best of their respective abilities. Hope you understand!
ALPHAS - PENDING, nobody ever received those
MODS - CONFIRMED, even sent some to partners
ACCENTS - CONFIRMED, even sent some to partners
YanboWuTotally happy for delays if it means not being disappointment. The four images above are, as has been pointed out already, completely useless without some sort of description. As there is none, I'm going to make a guess .... Here's a snip from the original renders:
search
I assume the issue is that, not matter which of the colors sent are selected, nothing will create the lovely 'pop' of the light color against the dark. The four pictures represent the possible options from the colors sent and, for me, the bottom image is the only one that could come close to giving that 'pop' and it wouldn't be close to the much lighter aquamarine color from the renders. Taking the renders alone, the best I can grab with a screen color tool is this color:

Whereas the color of the top left key in image four is:

Thinking about it, this is so far off that there's no way this is the right interpretation of the top four images. Perhaps the problem is that there's no good match for the background color of the alphas. Whatever the case, just popping four untitled images is not helping, it's just confusing.
Regardless of the confusion, it's clear that being there in person will allow a much quicker feedback loop in selecting the right colors to achieve the vision. Thanks MiTO for making certain that you're delivering on the vision you aimed for and sold to us.
YanboWuthe extra wait is a small price to pay for this set to turn out the way it needs to. I'm in for both of the Japanese legend sets and few other kits. I trust @MiTo will get the right colors confirmed and this will be an amazing set.
YanboWuKeep up the great work! I will wait as long as it takes for a quality product!!! When we all purchased this we knew we were going to have to wait till summer anyway right? So whats another couple months.
VigrithI was asking a legitimate question, he never disclosed what samples were sent out. If anything my question alleviated a concern that not only I had, but several others who have invested quite heavily into artisans for this set. The question may have been worded poorly but it wasn't meant to attack him or call into question his ability to do his job. If he took offense to that I apologize, it was never my intention. I'm quite certain he knows what hes doing, information is key here. Either way, thanks for your contribution (or lack thereof) to this conversation.
KM1337Just a brief update - I'm in Germany, safe and sound, we are working hard and I'm absolutely sure we will have a monumental final product. The team GMK has here and the resources at our disposal are beyond top notch, rest assured great things are coming out of this experience.
MiToThanks again for making sure this (highly anticipated) set is up to your standards! Do you (or GMK) have any idea how this issue will affect the ship date at this point?
