Support for Alternative Layouts
This is a summary of how alternative layouts have been supported by kits such as Colevrak and Homing. It is not a discussion of alt layout performance and development, but if that interests you I highly recommend starting with Pascal Getreuer’s A guide to alt keyboard layouts (why, how, which one?). It’s a concise and comprehensive overview with links to some great sites that go deeper. He also has a separate Links about keyboards page. The Keyboard layouts doc he recommends explains layout goals and metrics in detail, summarizing the alt layouts discussed here as well as more than one hundred others. Sculpted-profile The majority of custom keycap sets are sculpted-profile (Cherry, SA, MT3, KAT, etc. - more on profiles generally here) so let’s start there. Because each row has a unique keycap shape, alt layouts require a unique keycap for each legend that moves off its QWERTY row. If i can I will take no flash pictures outside when it stops raining. Had I bought the full keyboard of this, it would be an immediate return, as they look nothing like as pictured, color wise. It is disappointing to say the least. And I am not one who likes being patient after having been patient for a drop that has taken six months to come to fruition. Mito/Massdrop get your act together. This is a sad day and I am glad I don't have any more orders out that I am expecting. I will probably keep it that way for some time.
It is with a heavy heart that I had to write this, but I believe you and the end consumers will agree. When changes are going on mid way through the production, we absolutely deserve REAL progress pics of the final end product, as to not be deceived with what we will end up receiving.
If massdrop wants to reach out to me, I am all ears, but in no way do I feel I need to be the one reaching out to get this corrected, nor should I have to. Good luck massdrop.
Then you clearly didn’t know what to expect, because pink injected into purple is literally what this product is and always been. Not to mention this is what the sunset (top right cap) looks like in my desk with room lighting.
These are production pictures, they were literally shared with everyone. Mind you it’s extremely rare when it comes to plastic injection projects to have pre/mid production pictures. If you pay attention 99% of projects don’t have anything other than renders.
I genuinely don’t understand how on Earth anyone could possibly expect something different.
Also, you said " I was expecting defined purple keys with the printed pink on top. Not pink injected into the purple key. " so I'm not sure you know what doubleshot actually is if you understood that they were doubleshot...
I was over it after my first rant/post. However.... Mito's response was enough to let me know, no thank you on future endeavors. So sue me, I used the wrong terminology. It doesn't make my complaint any less valid. The caps are solid caps. The purple hue is just not excusable. Not even close to the original photos shown. I understood they were doubleshot, I mispoke when trying to describe how clean the concept photos were. It looked like a purple translucent shell with pink design on top, almost like it was printed, but the doubleshot filling the inside ruined the translucent effect of the concept.
That said, I am keeping the caps, not selling them. They are fine for my purposes... So long as I use a black light on them and give them an orange hue. Honestly though, that was the worst response I have ever read from someone who I ultimately bought a product from. Maybe they took it personally, maybe I came off harsh. But having worked retail for many years in my past.... you don't ridicule and/or belittle your paying customer.
Best experiences I have had have all come from artisan makers, Keyforge, ETF, CozCaps and hell... even Jelly Key fits that list. If anything was ever wrong, I talk to them, they either walk me through what to be to make it work or ask to send it back and they correct the situation. Mito, I am sure is well intention, but the response was disappointing to say the least.
